15 Disney couples ranked on relationship functionality (2024)

TOY STORY OF TERROR – Disney•Pixar’s first special for television, “Toy Story OF TERROR!”. Disney/Pixar 2013

When Jessie was first introduced in Toy Story 2, nearly everyone thought she was going to serve as Woody’s love interest. It makes sense, putting the cowboy and cowgirl together, especially with Bo Peep suddenly out of the picture. But Disney wasn’t so predictable; they decided to bring Jessie and Buzz together.

They also took their time. The romance between Jessie and Buzz wasn’t really introduced until the end of Toy Story 2, when Buzz struggles to flirt with her. But their relationship didn’t actually begin until Toy Story 3, when Buzz’s Spanish mode was activated.

They may be inanimate objects, but something about Jessie and Buzz just works. The toys were adorably awkward around each other, like any real relationship might start. Buzz stutters through his first attempt at flattery, but note that he goes for her personality before her looks.

Let’s take a look back:

Jessie always struggled with the idea being forgotten, and unvalued. But with Buzz, that can’t happen. Whether they were sent to the attic, or to the garbage incinerator, they were together to the end.

They’ve both been through their identity crises already, and have been through plenty together. Those shared experiences would go a long way in the real world.

With Toy Story 4 on the way, it should be interesting to see how Buzz and Jessie are faring these days. My guess? They’re doing just fine. It’s tough not ranking them higher on this list, but they’re facing some stiff competition in the Disney universe.
