The Needs Fulfillment of Medical and Specialist Doctors in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia
Background: Professionalism is the core duty of a doctor to be responsible to the society. Doctors’ professionalism depicts an internalization of values and mastery of professionals’ standards as an important part in shaping the trust between doctors and patients. Professionalism consists of various attributes in which current literature focused more on the perspective of the health professionals. Doctors’ professionalism may influence patients’ satisfaction, and therefore, it is important to know from the patients’ perspectives what was expected of medical doctors’ professionalism. Objective: This study was conducted to determine the attributes of physician professionalism from the patient’s perspective. Materials and Methods: This was a qualitative research using a phenomenology study design. In‑depth interviews were conducted with 18 patients with hypertension and diabetes who had been treated for at least 1 year in primary care facilities in the city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The results of the interview were transcribed, encoded, and then classified into categories. Results: Communication skills were considered as the top priority of medical doctors’ attributes of professionalism in the perspectives of the patients. Conclusion: This study revealed that communication skill is the most important aspects of professionalism which greatly affected in the process of health care provided by the primary care doctors. Doctor‑patient communication skills should be intensively trained during both basic and postgraduate medical education.

Physicians are virtuous profession because they deal with life and death and especially with vulnerable persons. It is a humanity profession. To be good physicians need to have high standard of compassion and care (virtue). Medical virtues have to be taught in the faculty of medicine so that the alumni have virtuous character. In their lives as physician, there are many regulations to maintain the application of virtue in their services. Unfortunately, now the erosion of virtues becomes more apparent. Some physicians are more profit-oriented rather than humanity-oriented.

Background: The distribution of health workers in Indonesia raises an interesting discussion since Indonesia as an archipelagic country has a wide geography and challenges for fulfilling equitable health services. Aim: This study identified factors related to the distribution of doctors in provinces of Indonesia. Methods: Advanced analysis of secondary data was done and obtained from the "Data and Information: Indonesian Health Profile in 2017". The units analyzed in this study were all 34 provinces in Indonesia. The variables analysed were the number of doctors, population, density, percentage of poor population, the number of hospitals, and the number of primary healthcare centers. Results: Variability in the number of doctors was very wide. The more the population is, the more attractive it is for doctors to conduct practices in the provinces. The denser the population are, the more doctors are interested to work in the provinces. It also figured out that doctors tend to opt to work in the provinces which have more hospitals and primary healthcare centers. Conclusions: Out of five independent variables studied, there were four variables related to the number of doctors distributed in the provinces. Population, density, the number of hospitals, and the number of primary healthcare centers were positively related to the number of doctors. The results of this study were important for doctor redistribution policy in Indonesia.

Introduction Indonesia is a huge country consisting of 33 provinces with different characteristics. There are 83 medical schools across Indonesia with different accreditation statuses. The Indonesia Medical Doctor National Competency Examination (IMDNCE) has been established to control the quality of medical school graduates. The implementation of IMDNCE needed to be evaluated to determine its impact. To date, there has not been any research in Indonesia that explores the stakeholders’ perceptions toward IMDNCE.
