8 Best Hairstyles For Healthy Hair: Start Avoiding Damage

23 March 2022 | Featured

Did you know that the hairstyles you wear can damage your hair? Not to worry, we’ve recommended 8 hairstyles for healthy hair to keep your locks in top-notch condition.

Why is it important to stop wearing damaging hairstyles?

Hairstyles such as high, tight ponytails and slicked back buns are firstly, very stylish. However, whilst it is fine to wear these styles on the odd occasion, we really don’t recommend them as everyday hairstyles if you want healthy hair.

But why are these hairstyles not good for your hair?

Any hairstyle that pulls the hair back creates tension on the hair follicles. This is especially true for the hair along your hairline.

When your hair is put under this stress for long periods of time, it can cause the hair to split and become weak. This can eventually lead to the hair breaking away from its roots. If the hair follicle itself becomes damaged, you might be facing some irreversible hair loss, causing the appearance of a receding hairline.

You might also experience headaches, which are caused by prolonged stress on your scalp’s nerves.

But please remember that this typically only occurs when you wear these tight hairstyles every day, for a long period of time. If you have an event coming up and you want to wear a tight pony, then flaunt it, girl!

With that being said, let’s look at some everyday hairstyles for healthy hair that will keep your hair in optimal condition.

  1. Low Bun

The low bun is an absolute classic hairstyle for healthy hair. With that bun sitting nicely on the nape of your neck, gravity won’t be tugging on your hair follicles anytime soon.

If you’ve done a low bun before, you might like to create a ponytail before twisting your hair around itself. It’s okay to do this if you want a very neat and put-together style, however, make sure the ponytail isn’t too tight.

You can start by choosing how your parting will look. Some prefer their parting to be showing, however, you might decide to scrape the hair back so the parting is covered. You’ll likely find that having your parting on show is much more flattering for your face shape.

Once you have your hair sitting to your preference, simply start twirling your hair loosely around your finger in the same direction. Then, wrap the hair around itself and secure it with a hair-tie.

Top tip: if you have any face-framing pieces, pull them out for an effortless, flattering finish.

  1. Pulled-Out Dutch Braid

Braiding can be like marmite: you either love it or hate it. But if you’re not a fan of braids, hear us out. They are the perfect way to create a put-together style whilst protecting your hair from damage.

The dutch braid is no exception. Plus, with the right execution, it can make your hair appear thicker and fuller.

If you’re accustomed to the french braid technique, then a dutch braid will be super easy for you. Instead of taking the pieces of hair over each other, you simply take them under. This is what creates the effect that the braid is sitting on your hair.

You can also get creative with this style. Opt for a single braid, or try french braid pigtails.

However, the key to this “pulled-out” style is in the name…once you reach the end of the hair, secure your braid with an elastic. Then, starting at the top of the braid, gently fan the braid out and work down to the end. If you have layered hair, be careful not to pull too much.

The result will be a voluminous yet put-together style.

  1. Half-Up, Half-Down

Half-up, half-down was a big trend a few years ago, but it’s still the perfect hairstyle for healthy hair.

The only thing to keep in mind with this style to ensure that it does not become damaging, is to make sure the ponytail is placed towards the back of the head, rather than on top. Otherwise, you will get a similar effect to a high ponytail, which we don’t want!

To achieve this look, take each hand and place your forefingers on that little space between the ear and the hairline. Then, drag your fingers back, moving very slightly upwards, until they meet in the middle. Whilst using one hand to hold your pony, brush the hair back to smooth any flyaways.

Then, secure with your hair tie of choice. We highly recommend using a scrunchie for a fun and preppy look.

  1. Messy High Bun

Sometimes, you need your hair completely out of your face. Whilst we know a high ponytail can cause damage, a high, loose bun is a much better option.

There are a few methods to make a high bun. You can firstly, use the same method as a low bun, where you twist the hair around itself. This creates a rounder, neater bun.

However, you can also use another method to create a more messy yet effortless look.

Heads up, if you have thick hair, you’ll need a pretty strong hairband for this.

Take your hair up to where you would like it to sit. Then, start tying the hair as if you were going to tie a ponytail. Once you have one (or two depending on how big the tie is) loop around the hair, do this again, but as you are pulling the hair through the hairband, only pull around half through.

Let go of the hair and you will be left with a fan-bun. You can pull this bun around, taking out pieces of hair and pinning other pieces back until you get your desired look.

Remember to pull out any curtain bangs to frame the face, too!

  1. Low Ponytail

This hairstyle for healthy hair doesn’t need much introduction. If you have never quickly tied your hair into a low pony, where have you been?

Whilst the low pony can sometimes be deemed unflattering, there are a few ways to jazz up this look.

Firstly, we recommend adding some waves or curls to your hair to give it some extra texture and volume.

Placement is also key to the low ponytail. Instead of having the ponytail sit flat against the nape of your neck, lift it slightly higher. This lifts the facial features, rather than dragging them down.

Finally, you can wrap a piece of hair around the hair tie to instantly add more elegance to your style. Secure this piece with a hairpin and you’re ready to go!

  1. Half Top-Knot

If you love half up, half down, you’re going to love this hairstyle too.

To achieve a half top knot, instead of taking your fingers by your ears, you’ll want to take them by the ends of the eyebrows, or higher depending on your preference. Brush the hair back once you have created your section, and simply twist it into a bun.

The great thing about this style is that it can be a lot more messy than half up, half down, so don’t worry about taming those flyaways as much.

  1. Space Buns

Feeling adventurous? Let’s be honest, we don’t see space buns every day, however, if you’re feeling a bit quirky, then why not give them a go?

Space buns are a great healthy hairstyle option since your scalp will not be weighed down by the full weight of your hair.

To create this look, you’ll start by parting the hair down the middle, from your hairline all the way to the back of your neck. To make it easier to work with, tie up one of the sides to keep the hair neatly sectioned.

On your first section, scrape the hair back and up to find your desired placement. Then, simply twist the hair around and secure it with a hair grip. On the other side, do the same – but the key is to match the first section. No one wants wonky buns!

As an alternative, you can also combine this look with the half up, half down hairstyle to create little baby buns (how cute).

  1. Braided Bun

Want a style that will impress without the hard work? A braided bun is the perfect versatile hairstyle that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

This hairstyle features two braids and a bun… because why have 1 protective hairstyle when you can merge 2 together?

To achieve this look, give yourself a nice clean middle parting. Then, on the first side, take a small section right at the parting that isn’t too close to the hairline. Simply braid this to the end of the hair and fan it out for extra volume. Repeat on the other side.

Next, scrape your hair to the back of your neck and tie a ponytail. Undo the braid, allowing them to unravel beneath the hair tie. You should be left with the braids going through the hair still.

Twist the hair into a bun and adjust according to your preference and voila – you now have fake dutch braids that are extremely Pinterest-worthy.
