Andy Reid is one of the most successful head coaches in NFL history and widely viewed as one of the game’s best head coaching minds over the past 24 seasons. Throughout his career, Reid has led the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eaglesand became the first NFL head coach to post at least 100 wins with two franchises.

Super Bowl 57 marked his fourth appearance in the NFL’s biggest game, winning his second Lombardi Trophy while playing against the club he used to coach.

Although Reid has been commanding NFL sidelines for nearly a quarter century, his football coaching career began like many others — within the college ranks. He played offensive tackle at Glendale Community College followed by BYU. Following his playing days, Reid stuck with the Cougars as a graduate assistant for the 1982 season.

From there, Reid spent the next nine years as a college offensive line coach, spending time with San Francisco State, Northern Arizona, UTEP, and Missouri before Reid entered the NFL in 1992 when Mike Holmgren hired him as the Green Bay Packers assistant offensive line and tight ends coach.

In that role, he helped Green Bay win Super Bowl XXXI over the New England Patriots before getting promoted to replace outgoing quarterbacks coach Marty Mornhinweg in 1997. In 1999, the Eagles attempted to hire Holmgren, but he left Green Bay to accept the head-coaching position with the Seattle Seahawks.

Holmgren recommended Reid to Philadelphia. The Eagles, taking that recommendation, hired him even though he’d never served as a coordinator at any level. Reid was just 41 years old when he was hired by Philadelphia, making him the second-youngest head coach at the time behind only Jon Gruden.

Reid went on to become the Eagles’ most successful coach in franchise history, where he coached and won more games than any other Philadelphia HC. His .583 winning percentage sits behind only Greasy Neale and current Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni for the franchise’s best record.

In 13 seasons with the Eagles, Reid led the Birds to nine postseason berths, five NFC Championship Games, and one Super Bowl appearance. While he never won a ring in Philly, Reid turned the Eagles into one of the more respected organizations in the NFL during his tenure.

Reid’s worst season as Philadelphia’s head coach came in 2012 when he posted a 4-12 record before agreeing to part ways with the team. Instead of taking a year off, Reid instantly began the second chapter of his career with the Chiefs.

Reid took Kansas City to the playoffs four times in five seasons with Alex Smith under center, but his most significant contribution was trading up to select Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 NFL Draft. With Mahomes at his side, Reid has dominated the AFC for the past five years, hosting the AFC title game each season.

All told, Reid has the best winning percentage in Chiefs’ head-coaching history. He has just seven fewer victories than legendary Kansas City head coach Hank Stram, so he should be able to claim that record at some point in 2023.

In KC, Reid has won seven division titles, made the playoffs nine times, and earned his first Lombardi by defeating the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV. He’s shored up his standing as a future Hall of Fame head coach, and grabbing another Super Bowl ring will only add to his legacy that cements him as one of the league’s very best.

Reid’s career regular-season record is 255-141-1, which includes a 130-93-1 mark with the Eagles and a 125-48 ledger with the Chiefs. Belichick has the most playoff wins in league history (31), but Reid is second on the list (22).

Reid is also tied for the second-most postseason losses (16) behind Shula, but that’s indicative of a coach who earned repeated playoff berths.

Reid was successful with the Eagles, but his run with the Chiefs has been unprecedented. He’s managed a .722 winning percentage in KC. The only head coaches with a better track record over their entire careers are Guy Chamberlin, John Madden, and Vince Lombardi.

Reid’s Salary and Net Worth

NFL head-coaching salaries aren’t as public as NFL players’ contract details, but Reid is believed to earn roughly $12.5 million per season.

He’s currently behind Bill Belichick ($20 million), Pete Carroll ($15 million), and Sean McVay ($14 million), and tied with Mike Tomlin.

Given his success, Reid will always be among the NFL’s highest-paid coaches. At present, his net worth is believed to be between $20 million and $30 million.

Reid’s Current Contract With the Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs announced extensions for Reid and general manager Brett Veach in Nov. 2020. Both decision-makers are thought to be tied to Kansas City through 2025, but that probably won’t mark the end of Reid’s coaching career.

Reid doesn’t figure to retire anytime soon. He’s said that he’s open to coaching into his seventies, while Mahomes said Reid told him he plans to be the Chiefs’ head coach for the duration of Mahomes’ extension, which runs through the 2031 campaign.

“I still get to [the] Fourth of July, and all of a sudden, the juices start going,” Reid said in Aug. 2022. “And you’re going, ‘Man, I can’t wait to get back and get this thing going.’ So I’m still feeling that.”
