UPDATE: October 20, 2003 -- Since our original article was published, we looked at all World Series back to 1905 with a best-of-seven format. According to our unofficial count, 35 out of 94 World Series have gone to Game 7 - a rate of 37.2 percent.

The World Series first employed a best-of-seven format in 1905. That format has been used annually since then, with four exceptions: 1919, 1920, and 1921, which were contested as best-of-nine series (as was the 1903 edition), and 1994, when the MLB postseason was cancelled due to a players' strike.

In total, the World Series has gone to a Game 7 on 40 occasions.
