Basketball Three-Point Line Distance

The three-point line is measured from the center of the rim to the arc that designates the 3-point line. All 3-point line measurements are to the outside of the line.

  • NBA 3-Point Line measures 23’-9”.
  • College Men (NCAA) 3-Point Line measures 22’-1.75” starting 2020 – 2021 season. This is the same as international standards.
  • College Women (NCAA) 3-Point Line measures 20’-9”.
  • High-School 3-Point line measures 19’-9” to the outside of the lines.

ModuTile’s standard backyard basketball court flooring kits all come with high school 3-point lines. Upon request, we can paint any of the above lines.

Basketball Half Court Dimensions (baseline by sideline)

We understand that many backyards are small. Hence, we offer kits starting at 20’ x 24’. Our most common basketball kit is our 30×30 basketball half court floor, but we can customize your floor kit to any size, position, or line requirement needed. For example, any non-standard lines, shifted court due to the pole positioning, uneven dimensions, etc. The smallest basketball half-court is 16’ x 20’ ft and the largest court we made was a 78’ x 152’. The official half-court dimensions are as follow.

  • NBA Professional Half Court Dimension is 50’ baseline by 47’ sidelines.
  • College Women’s and Men’s basketball half-court dimensions are the same as the NBA.
  • High School basketball half-court dimension is 50’ baseline by 42’ sideline.

Basketball Key Dimensions (Free Throw Lane)

In the USA, the official basketball key dimensions are all the same except for professional play. The basketball key lines for the NBA are wider. The official dimensions are as follow.

  • NBA key is 16’ wide by 19’ from baseline to free throw line. The 19’ include the 4’ backboard overhang.
  • College and High school basketball key dimension is 12’ wide by 19’ baseline to free throw line. That also includes the 4’ backboard overhang.

Basketball Backboard Overhang Distance

Basketball Half Court Dimensions (6)

This refers to the distance from the baseline to the front of the backboard. Depending on the size and location of the court you are building, the backboard overhang varies from 0’ to 6’. In residential outdoor basketball courts, the most common backboard overhang distance is 2’. The official backboard overhang for NBA, College and High School is 4 feet.

Review the illustration visually see what we mean by backboard overhang. The illustration shows a 2′ backboard overhang centered on the court, but we can customize it to your needs.

Why do I need consider the backboard overhang distance?

In indoor at home basketball court installations, the backboard maybe on the wall. Hence, the backboard overhang will automatically be zero. However, in most backyard basketball court installations, you have some discretion. The smaller the backboard overhang the more room you have for your three-point line. However, the larger the backboard overhang, the more room you have to run behind the backboard. If you are running toward the hoop, you have more space to stop before hitting a fence, landscape border, etc. If possible, for 20’ x 24’ courts we recommend a 2’ backboard overhang. For courts larger than 30’ x 30’, we would recommend a 3’ or larger overhang. To avoid injuries, the ideal overhang size is 4 feet. In addition to a larger overhang, pole padding is always recommended.

What is a good size for a backyard basketball court?

ModuTile most popular backyard basketball court size is a 30×30 ft half-court floor kit. This provides enough room to play above the 3-point line while not breaking the budget. However, the answer boils down to budget and space availability.

As for the size of a full backyard basketball court, we would recommend our 46×78 ft full court basketball floor kit. It is smaller than regulation, but it has the room for small children and adults to play comfortably.
