Bob Esponja is the Latin American Spanish dub of SpongeBob SquarePants. It has previously aired on Nicktoons Latin America, América Televisión, América TV, Antena 7, Azteca Uno, Canal 2, Canal 3 and Canal 5 Honduras, and it is currently airing on Canal 5 Mexico, Nickelodeon Latin America and Nickelodeon United States, Nicktoons United States —both via a secondary audio program—, PAT, Teleamazonas and Telefe.
Dubbing History[]
The dubbing of the series began shooting at the end of 1999 at the Etcétera Group studios in Caracas, Venezuela. The series had not had an artistic director at that time, but, like almost all productions dubbed in Caracas at the time, the same actors directed themselves with the help of a recording engineer who used the audio and dialogues of each one of them. while they made their characters, implying that each one was directed while some actors worked on the technical operation. At that time, the original cast of the series was made up of Kaihiamal Martínez, Paul Gillman, Renzo Jiménez, Luis Pérez Pons, Mercedes Prato, Isabel Vara, Irina Índigo, Óscar Zuloaga and Rocío Mallo.
Heading into the second season, several studio actors (including Kaihiamal Martinez, who also played the snail Gary; whose meows were done by him, except in the episode Sleepy Time, where it's unknown why he didn't play him) had to leave. to their characters respectively due to their intentions to form a small union with some colleagues in search of a fair salary, for this reason Etcétera Group fired them along with a part of the original cast. Many of the actors who participated in the first season were definitively successful in their characters from the second season, either because they were fired by the studio, and others for leaving the country and emigrating to others, as was the case. Kaihiamal Martínez (SpongeBob) himself, eliminated by Luis Carreño, Mercedes Prato (Sandy Cheeks), replaced by Anabella Silva, Óscar Zuloaga (Plankton), eliminated by Luis Miguel Pérez, Rocío Mallo (Karen), replaced by Melanie Henríquez, Irina Índigo (Pearl), replaced by Yensi Rivero, Antonio Delli (Barnacle Boy and Larry the Lobster), completed by Alex Orozco and Luis Miguel Pérez respectively and Orlando Noguera (The French Narrator and reader of the inserts), replaced in both roles by Juan Guzmán, changing the cast and the recording team at that time, while the direction was again made by the actors and engineers themselves who worked in the studio (at that time it was not recognized I knew the image of the dubbing director outside of Mexico).
In 2004, Paul Gillman would retire from the field of dubbing in favor of representing his well-known musical career, so his character of Patrick Star would be taken by Alfonso Soto, who would begin to interpret him from the first film. In 2005, Walter Véliz, Guillermo Martínez, Jesús Hernández and Judith Noguera joined the team as technical operators, and just as in previous seasons, there was still no director, so the actors would return to directing themselves, it is also worth noting that as of the 3rd season, the actors Armando Volcanes and Héctor Isturde would double the characters of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, replacing the actors Juan Guzmán and Alex Orozco respectively. Over time, some characters would begin to have abrupt and diverse voice changes, either due to the itinerary of their respective actors, or due to the withdrawal of their dubbing.
In 2008; the actors Anabella Silva and Ezequiel Serrano retired from dubbing to move to London, therefore their roles in the series would be dubbed by other actors, Perca Perkins was dubbed by Jhonny Torres in the 5th season and Rolman Bastidas would become little then her official voice in season 4 and from 6 to 8, while Sandy Cheeks began to be dubbed by Lileana Chacón from season 6, her voice continuing until now.
In that same year, the actor Luis Pérez Pons also stopped working for the company Etcétera Group and therefore stopped dubbing Mr. Krabs, being the special Whatever Happened to SpongeBob? the last material where he dubbed the character, starting with the 6th season, the character would be dubbed by Carlos Vitale. In 2011, Yensi Rivero also retired from dubbing since she went to settle in Spain, therefore her role as Pearl Krabs is dubbed by Melanie Henríquez. In this same year, from season 8, Walter Véliz entered as artistic director, this being the first season to have dubbing direction.
In mid-2012, the actors Luis Miguel Pérez and Rebeca Aponte retired from dubbing due to their change of residence from the city of Caracas, the place where the series was dubbed, to Mérida-Venezuela, for this reason the roles that both actors played in the series were assigned to other actors and actresses such as Plankton, who would be played by Héctor Indriago, who was expected to take the character, but he only doubled it in one chapter and it was Ángel Mujica who would take the character uninterruptedly from the 9th season From now on, Man Ray began to be dubbed in the 3rd season by Jesús Rondón and in the 5th season it was played by Guillermo Martínez and from the 6th to the 9th season it was played by Ledner Belisario until his retirement from dubbing due to his move to Miami, Florida, although later he would do dubbing there again. The character of Margaret SquarePants became voiced by Maythe Guedes.
In 2013, the actor Gonzalo Fumero retired from dubbing after emigrating to France and his role as Potty was dubbed by Rolman Bastidas, and although he returned to Venezuela in mid-2015, he did not resume the character, leaving Bastidas as his official voice. Fumero went to live abroad again at the end of 2015, to Buenos Aires, Argentina; where he continues to work as a dubbing actor. In the same way, in that year, the actor Carlos Vitale withdrew from dubbing and the company contacted the actor Luis Pérez Pons again, with whom, after reaching an economic agreement, he resumed his character from the 9th season of the series, making his official return in the second film.
In 2014, the actors Luis Miguel Pérez and Rebeca Aponte confirmed on their social networks that they would return to dubbing again since they would set up a small dubbing studio where they lived, in Mérida-Venezuela, and they planned to reach agreements with the company Etcétera Group to record their characters from there, but in the end, said negotiation was not achieved, however in the middle of that year they decided to return to Caracas and both would continue their work in dubbing but only the actress Rebeca Aponte would resume Margaret SquarePants during the 8th season. It is still unknown why Luis Miguel did not resume any character that he had dubbed in the series. At the end of that year the actor and technical operator Guillermo Martínez would also die, therefore; he would abruptly drop the technical details of the series and some of the characters he had voiced up until then.
In 2015 more changes occur in the series. The actress Melanie Henríquez retires from dubbing, after dubbing Karen for the last time in the second film, since she went to settle in Spain, and therefore; Her roles as Karen and Pearl Krabs are dubbed by Mariangny Álvarez and Gabriela Belén in the ninth season respectively, however, in the tenth season Gabriela is replaced in the role of Karen by Sixnalie Villalba. It is also revealed that the actress Isabel Vara was replaced by Elena Díaz Toledo as of the tenth season in the character of Mrs. Puff, due to her move to Miami, Florida. During a few seasons of the series, some secondary characters had changes in the dubbing; Man Ray began to be voiced by Luis José Lugo after the move of Ledner Belisario to Miami, Jesús Hernández voiced Larry the Lobster in the ninth season after the retirement of Carlos Vitale, but in the tenth and eleventh season he was also voiced by Luis José Lugo, however, in the 12th season, Jesus returns to his character.
In the middle of that year, Luis Carreño would begin to voice the character of SpongeBob from one of the Etcétera Group headquarters in Miami due to his move to that place due to labor issues. Despite the fact that he had begun to voice the title character by then (and some episodes with his work done in Miami had already been released), it was contemplated to replace Carreño with a Mexican dubbing actor (for reasons that were never clarified), and even, on February 18, 2016, preparations were made for a casting in that country in the dubbing studio DAT Doblaje Audio Traducción, at which time, the fans came to collect signatures so that the actor Kaihiamal Martínez, who already resided in Mexico, would resume the character. However, Carreño managed to reach an agreement with Nickelodeon to continue dubbing the character from the United States for the rest of the series.
Recently; in 2016, the most current changes in dubbing took place. The actor Jhonny Torres would leave the Venezuelan country to settle in Mexico where he would continue his work as a dubbing actor, for which he left several recurring characters in the series that he had dubbed until then. The same way; His compatriot Rolman Bastidas would leave Venezuela to go and settle in the Dominican Republic, although at first it was not certain to continue working as a dubbing actor in that country, finally he announced on his Facebook account that he would follow him making. Even so, Bastidas was replaced in various roles of him; Perca Perkins was loaned to actor Oscar Caraballo later to Alejandro Mejía then to Gherald De Fonseca and finally to Oswaldo Gómez, Róbalo Burbuja would be dubbed by David Silva from season 9 to 12 however in season 13 David is replaced by José Gómez Chompré as Bubble Bass, and finally, Armando Da Silva takes the role of Potty in the following seasons.
