Never tried skates, but from my experience with skis, material removal would be too slow. You could use it to refine the edge, but steel used in those are very soft (by knife standards) and not worth the effort.

Usually you need to remove a lot more metal to sharpen skates, for this power tools are the best. I always take our skates to the local shoemaker and he sharpens them on a wheel grinder for a minimal fee. :)

Definitely not. Skates, as you know, have two edges, one at each corner of the blade. Between the edges the surface is not flat but concave. This concavity is critical to creating the microlayer of liquid water that allows skates to mover across the ice with so little friction. Just take them to a shop with a sharpener - they rarely charge more than a few dollars.

I know nothing about skates but here is a quote from the DMT sharpening site. I remembered seeing something about skates from them but didn't remember what. This is probably of little help to you but here it is. It came from their FAQ section.
13. Can I sharpen figure skates or hockey skates with a DMT® sharpener?
We do not recommend sharpening figure skates with a DMT® sharpener. The bottom of hockey skates should also be sharpened professionally because there is a hollow grind on the bottom of the blade. DMT® sharpeners are great for taking the burr off the side of skates. In fact, many professional hockey players use DMT® sharpeners during practice and during games to remove the burr off their skates — just like skiers and snowboarders do.

I don't know if it's possible, but I'd love to see Sal try it to see if it's at all possible. :D

Seems that with some patience and diamond stones it might be plausible, but the concave area at the bottom would need something else most likely - a dremel with the right stone would probably work.
