Canada emerged victorious at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship after Kent Johnson netted the golden goal in overtime to give Canada the 3-2 victory over Finland.

Joshua Roy opened the scoring in the first period for Canada. Anaheim Ducks prospect Mason McTavish took the initial shot and Roy buried the rebound to give Canada the lead.

41 seconds into the second period, New York Islanders prospect William Dufour delivered a snipe, extending Canada’s lead. With Canada leading 2-0 heading to the third period, Finland started their comeback. Aleksi Heimosalmi cut the deficit to one, with assists from Eemil Viro and Juuso Maenpaa. Then, at the 10:46 mark, Nashville Predators first round draft pick Joakim Kemell tied the game.
In an exhilarating overtime, McTavish pulled the puck off of the goal line at one end and Johnson scored the golden goal at the other, sealing the Canada victory.
“To be honest, I got pretty lucky,” McTavish said after the game on the save.

McTavish was named the top forward of the tournament. Florida Panthers prospect Kasper Puutio was the top defenseman while Minnesota Wild goalie prospect Jesper Wallstedt took top goalie honors.

This is Canada’s first gold medal at the World Juniors since 2020. It is Canada’s 19th World Junior title in tournament history.
