Connor McDavid is currently having one of the best NHL seasons a player can have. McDavid scored his 58th power-play point on Saturday, March 4, surpassing Wayne Gretzky's franchise record.
With this remarkable feat, McDavid now holds the record for scoring the most power-play points in a single season in Edmonton Oilers history.
During the 1981-82 season, Wayne Gretzky set the record for the most power-play points for the Oilers with 57. Interestingly, it was the same year that "The Great One" scored 92 goals and had 212 points. Although Gretzky did have seasons in which he scored 59 and 61 points on the power play, these were with the Los Angeles Kings.
As we approach the later stages of the 2022-23 NHL season, there are a few other records Connor McDavid could set this season.
Impressive feats Connor McDavid could acheve this season
#1. The 70-goal club
Only 8 players in NHL history have reached the 70-goal mark in a single season. Wayne Gretzky holds the record for the most goals in a season with 92. As of now, McDavid has scored 62 goals with 5 games remaining on the schedule.
At his current pace, the 26-year-old has a realistic shot at reaching 70 goals on the season. He would become just the 9th player in league history to accomplish this feat.
#2. Three consecutive Art Ross Trophies
Connor McDavid is currently atop the NHL leaderboard with 146 points on the season. His fellow Oilers teammate Leon Draisaitl trails him with 120 points. If the leaderboard remains the same by the end of the season, Connor McDavid will be tied for third all-time with five Art Ross Trophies. The Oilers star will also become the first player to win three consecutive Art Ross Trophies since Wayne Gretzky.
#3. Break the record for most power-play points (80)
58 of Connor McDavid's 122 points on the season have come on the power play. Currently, the record for the most points scored on the power play in a single season belongs to Mario Lemieux. The legendary Pittsburgh Penguins forward recorded 80 power-play points during the 1987-88 campaign. McDavid will need to record 23 power-play points in the final 18 games to surpass this record.
#4. Road to the 150-point club
As of writing this, McDavid has accumulated 146 points in 77 games this season. With 18 games left, the 26-year-old could reach the 150-point mark if he continues at the same pace.
If he accomplishes this, he will become the first player to reach 150 points in a single season since Mario Lemieux (161) in 1995-96. He would be just the sixth player in NHL history to reach this milestone.
