Covering bruising following plastic surgery - Allen Foulad MD (2024)

Effective concealment of bruises typically requires application of multiple layers of makeup.

The first layer is used to neutralize the color you are trying to cover. If the bruise is a purple shade, use a yellow tinted product to first cover the bruise. If the bruise is more red, then use a green product, and if it’s healing and has turned yellowish, use a peach toned product to camouflage its appearance. If you are attempting to cover up a scar that is currently in the process of healing, we recommend going with a heavy-duty concealer gradually layered on with a brush.

Once you’ve blocked out the discoloration, you’ll need to cover the area with a second layer of product that is a shade lighter than your skin tone. Always be careful not cause any irritation or discomfort to the area by applying gently and carefully.

If you have incisions from your procedure, you will need to wait until your stitches are removed and the wound heals before you can start using makeup.

Be sure to carefully cleanse your face and remove all traces of makeup in the evening. Using a cleansing oil will soften your skin and loosen the makeup, so you do not have to rub or put pressure on the sensitive areas. It is imperative you never apply cosmetics to any open wounds or stitches to avoid the increased risk of complications. If you ever have doubts about whether or not it’s safe for you to apply makeup following any procedure, please consult with Dr. Foulad or the Foulad MD office team.
