A waiver is an act of the government to intentionally relinquish its claim against an individual for a debt resulting from erroneous payments of wages or allowances. How do I Apply for a Waiver?
Waiver eligibility and submission requirements depend on who is applying. To determine what is required to apply, select your status below:
We cannot process your waiver request if you dispute your debt. You do not have to agree that you should have to pay the debt back, but you must agree that the debt is valid against your pay account. If you state in the DD Form 2789 that you dispute or are protesting the amount, validity or type of debt against your account, DFAS will return your application to you.
Remissions
DFAS does NOT have authority to process remissions for any military services. Inquiries should be directed to your service for application information and required documentation.
What is a Remission?
A remission is the cancellation of a debt or portion of a debt by the Secretary of a Military Department.
Who is Eligible for Remission?
A remission is for military members or former military members who have a debt that was incurred on active duty after Oct. 7, 2001.Financial hardship, as well as other emotional aspects, may be considered for remission. The laws governing remissions may consider financial or personal hardship, a member’s value to the service, compassion, justice and good faith.
