The Snapshot app with Road Test collects information about how you drive, how much you drive, when you drive, and how you use your phone while behind the wheel. While location data is collected as well, it doesn't impact the Snapshot results you earn, but may be used for underwriting purposes.
Does the app have GPS? The mobile app uses GPS to calculate your speed over time, mileage, and driving behaviors such as hard braking. Location data is used to provide trip information on the phone. It may also be used for underwriting purposes but is not used in determining your personalized rate.
The Snapshot device records "Snapshot Data," which includes vehicle speed and location using GPS, time information, Vehicle Identification Number, G force (in some devices), as well as when the device is plugged into and unplugged from the vehicle.
There's no need to open the app—it'll just run in the background and collect data as you drive, unless Pause Monitoring is enabled. How does the app know if I'm driving? The Snapshot mobile app tracks movement of a certain speed and distance to determine when you're driving.
Car insurance tracking apps use various sensors and data sources within your smartphone to collect information about your driving behavior. The Global Positioning System in your smartphone plays a crucial role in tracking your location and movement.
Gyroscopes in modern smartphones are capable of measuring rotational along a vertical axis, called yaw. By observing the direction of the yaw, we should be able to perform the driver-passenger classification.
Does Progressive Snapshot track your speed? Yes, Progressive Snapshot tracks speed and rapid acceleration. Other driving tracked by Progressive Snapshot includes hard braking, the amount you drive, using your phone while driving and the time of day you drive.
While you can unplug your Progressive Snapshot device, Progressive will know about it. Repeated unplugging during your initial monitoring period means Progressive will not have enough data to set a performance discount, and it could also cause the company to take away your participation discount.
Drive less overall — Snapshot rewards carpoolers and other infrequent drivers, though participants need to log at least 4,000 miles per year. Avoid texting, calling or other handheld phone activity — this behavior is only considered in certain states and only if you use the Snapshot app.
How Much Can You Save With Progressive Snapshot? You can earn a Snapshot discount when you renew your Progressive auto insurance policy, usually after six months of using the program. According to the Progressive website, drivers who qualify for a Snapshot discount save an average of $156 per year.
Roughly 20% of drivers see their auto insurance rates increase after using Snapshot, according to Progressive. Good drivers save an average of $145 per year with Progressive Snapshot, however.
With the mobile app, you can use your smart phone to get driving data collected. The mobile option even lets you pause the data without penalty. The discount provided is the same whether you use the device or mobile. You will be able to check your progress in real time on the app.
Do not use a single snapshot for more than 72 hours. The snapshot file continues to grow in size when it is retained for a longer period. This can cause the snapshot storage location to run out of space and impact the system performance.
You have to keep the Snapshot device in your car for however long it takes Progressive to gather enough driving data to determine your discount. This typically takes between 75 days and six months. Once your discount has been determined, Progressive stops monitoring your driving.

All customers opting out of Snapshot must return the device to Progressive. How does a customer opt out? or call Progressive anytime directly at 877-329-RATE.
