The majority of football jerseys are made of polyester or a combination of polyester. A synthetic fiber created to resemble cotton is called polyester. Although it feels similar to cotton, it has better wicking properties and durability than a natural textile like cotton.

Football shirts are typically made of polyester and a blend of polyester and elastane, but many different materials are used depending on the feature prioritized in the shirt's design and its purpose.

Silk jersey fabrics are probably the smoothest and softest of all. These knits are fine and thin, very often translucent, with a beautiful silky sheen. Naturally elastic, they have even better stretch if produced with lycra or any other elastic fibers.

Jersey fabric is classed as a synthetic fabric if made from a filament like polyester, natural if made from a natural yarn like cotton, or man-made if made from an artificial yarn like viscose. Its weight, elasticity and texture will depend on the knitting process.

Jersey fabric is defined by the way it is constructed, being a knitted, stretch fabric rather than a stable woven material. Often called jersey knit, jersey is made by knitting yarns in loops which is how the fabric gets it's stretch.

100% polyester woven fabric is shiny. Primarily used in the shoulder/sleeves for football and lacrosse jerseys and in basketball uniforms. 100% polyester interlock performance fabric with moisture-wicking properties. Very tight weave resists snagging.

Originally made of wool fibers, currently, the jersey is most commonly made of cotton. Jersey can be 100% cotton or it can be made with additions. You'll most often see jerseys with added elastane or lycra, which add to the overall elasticity of the fabric.

Heavier jersey fabrics are easier to sew and make more structured garments. Heavier jersey materials are Ponte Roma and scuba, they are a double jersey fabric and are more stable.

Jersey is a knit fabric that is commonly used in clothing. In the past, most jersey fabric was made with wool, but it's now more common to find cotton and synthetic jersey garments. While many athletic jerseys are made with jersey fabric, the fabric “jersey” is different from the garment “athletic jersey.”

Due to its stretch and soft feel it is a very pleasant fabric to wear and is ideal for garments where comfort is key. The versatility of cotton jersey means that you can sew a wide variety of clothes that will move comfortably, for every body type.

What is a single jersey fabric? ›

Single Jersey, also known as basic fabric, is a weft knitted fabric. It is knitted with one row of needles. This fabric has a flat loop on one side and a reverse loop structure on the other side and that's why its front and back faces are different from each other.

Zigzag stitch

The easiest way to sew jersey on your machine is to use the standard zigzag setting. For most jersey a stitch length of 2mm and width of 2.5m will work but you can adjust slightly around these numbers to get the right measurements for your fabric.

Basic jersey is made in one of 2 knit structures:

Single jersey - this usually feels slightly thinner and has a V pattern on the front side. It can be very stretchy. Double jersey - this usually looks the same on both sides and is often slightly thicker and more stable.

Polyester is the workhorse of the workout fabrics, the one you see on labels most often. Basically polyester cloth, it's durable, wrinkle-resistant, lightweight,breathable, and non-absorbent, which means that moisture from your skin evaporates instead of being drawn into the material.

Jersey is a low-maintenance fabric. You can machine wash it rather than have it dry-cleaned. While jersey does have a tendency to shrink, shrinkage can be avoided by washing in cold water or washing by hand, and air-drying or tumble drying on the low setting.

When jersey material is made of 100% cotton, it's naturally breathable and absorbent. The fabric's moisture-wicking abilities let it draw sweat away from your skin, which is great for folks who perspire while they sleep.

NFL Jerseys are usually made of a nylon/polyester weave. NBA Jerseys, on the other hand, are made of almost exclusively polyester. MLB Jerseys consist of double-knit polyester.
