You’re running late, the bank closes in ten minutes, and you just can’t decide which pair of shoes go with plaid. Then it hits you, are these clothes “bank appropriate”? Are elevator shoes reasonable to wear when cashing a check? While we can’t make fashion choices for you, we have the inside scoop on things not to wear to a bank.

Ski masks.

This one usually goes without saying. If you wear a ski mask to a branch, we will assume you are a professional winter-athlete. We may be shy and coy at first, but the uncontrollable urge to ask you for a signature or a fingerprint is almost unbearable. Please forgive some star struck employees who may take pictures or commit your profile to memory. We really would hate to forget what you look like.

Sunglasses.

A common request inside a branch is for customers to remove sunglasses. Sunglasses, while fashionable and important for eye protection, make it appear as if you’re trying to evade surveillance cameras. Plus, they’re capable of a strong reflection, which tellers love to use these to check their appearance. Bank employees are not held responsible for selfie-worthy poses, hairdo checks, or rocking-out, karaoke-style, with a hairbrush as a microphone in the reflection of your sunglasses.

Hats.

We love a good hat. However, they pose the same issue as sunglasses, so we do ask that they be removed. Not to mention, a fashionable hat may prompt some sort of hat competition among staff and customers, causing the situation to snowball out of control. A simple ball cap worn may eventually lead to an entire branch full of fedoras and sun hats that would make the Kentucky Derby jealous.

Darth Vader Costumes.

We didn’t think this was necessary to bring up. The leaders of the dark side, Siths as they are known, misuse the great responsibility of the Force. Our local branch Jedis may be put on edge by any reference or likeness to Darth Vader, Darth Maul, or Senator Palpatine/Darth Sidious. In order to avoid a confrontation that may affect the galactic order, we encourage everyone to leave their light sabers (especially red ones) at home.
