Gretsch Custom Shop guitars are the only Gretsches currently built in the USA. They are made in extremely small numbers, too: we're talking in the low hundreds, annually! These are typically small runs of limited guitars or straight-up one-off creations, very often with custom finishes and appointments.

Guitar production by the Gretsch Company began in the early 1930s, and Gretsch guitars became highly sought after, most notably in the 1950s and 1960s.

It's a bit of a niche guitar, appealing to a smaller group who are willing to pay more (aka the Mac phenomenon.) In that way, Gretsch is analogous to Rickenbacker. The resale value is commensurate with the original price as well. And, of course, they're worth it.

Nowadays, [White Penguins] go for anything between $125,000 to $150,000. Gibson Explorers sell for five times as much, but they're rarer than those and they're much, much rarer than 'Bursts. You know the slogan, 'That great Gretsch sound'? Well, it's certainly their sound.

Gretsch began date-coding serial numbers in August 1966. Date-coded serial numbers are typically found stamped on the back or top of the headstock, and "Made in USA" is stamped next to the number starting in June 1967.
