Has there ever been a scoreless first quarter in the Super Bowl? (2024)

The Chiefs and 49ers battled throughout the first quarter of Super Bowl 58, but neither team was able to score, which isn't an uncommon result in Super Bowl history.

LAS VEGAS — At the end of the first quarter, it is looking like Super Bowl 58 could go down as a defensive battle as the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs battled, but were unable to score.

But has there ever been a 0-0 tie at the end of the first quarter of a Super Bowl? 12News took a look at the NFL record books to find out.

It turns out that, yes, there has been a 0-0 tie after the first quarter of a Super Bowl before. In fact, it has happened nine times, which is 15.5% of all Super Bowls.

The last time a Super Bowl ended 0-0 after the first quarter was Super Bowl 53 between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams in Atlanta in 2019. That game, which was also Tom Brady's final Super Bowl championship with New England, ended with a 13-3 Patriots victory.

It also happened in Super Bowl 51 in Houston, which was the Patriots' famous 28-3 comeback victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
