so if you are running the option, you can "shovel pass" to the tailback, even if he is in front of you as long as you (the qb) has not crossed the line of scrimage?
Maybe some refer to it as a shuffle pass but I've always heard shovel.
A forward lateral is illegal because it is passed the line of scrimmage.
A shovel pass is when the qb is behind the line and throws it forward, it is just like any other forward pass except in the way it is thrown. If it is dropped it is an incomplete pass.
It's shovel, and it's a pass because it is tossed forward.

As long as the passer is behind the line of scrimmage anything tossed forward is a legal pass. Anywhere on the field a ball can be tossed backward. Overhand or underhand makes no difference no matter where it is thrown. That's why you've seeen cross-field, overhand passes on kickoffs -- as long as they are thrown backward, they're laterals.
The term forward lateral is usually used as an infraction.

A shovel pass is technically a forward pass but is called a shovel pass because of the way it is thrown. Notice that a screen pass is a short pass behind the line of scrimmage too so the term "shovel" pertains to the way the ball is thrown.
