Hockey Backchecking Basics

A forward's first job is to simply start moving their feet, skating hard to get back. Always skate through the middle of the ice to clog up passing lanes, and keep your stick on the ice. As you skate back, keep your head up, so you can see the puck and assess the situation in front of you.

The purpose of forechecking is to disrupt a breakout and regain possession of the puck while in your offensive zone. If you've played basketball, this is similar to “full court press[ure]”. Backchecking, simply put, means to hustle back to your defensive zone to prevent the other team from attacking and scoring.

Sandbagging is when a test taker purposefully underperforms on a task in order to portray a lower estimate of ability or performance.

As soon as you pick up the puck, move out of the area quickly. If you can't avoid being checked, position yourself to accept the blow. If you are checked from the side, keep your head up, get a good stable position, feet apart, knees bent, body in a low position, forearms and hands on the boards.

Hockey Shoulder Check

In a shoulder check, a player leads with the shoulder when hitting an opponent. The player delivering the hit must keep the elbow tucked in or risk a penalty, particularly if the elbow comes anywhere near the opponent's head.

Can you hit from behind in hockey? ›

Hitting an opponent from behind is a penalty. It carries an automatic minor penalty and misconduct, or a major penalty and game misconduct if it results in injury. See checking.
