How Should Hockey Pants Fit?
Both hockey pants and hockey girdles should be snug with the belt around your waist, not your hips. Hockey pants will fall a little longer, overlapping the kneecap of your shin guard by about half way. Since girdles are tighter, they’ll be shorter than pants so they don’t interfere with your shin guards.
When you stand upright in hockey pants, the bottom of the pants should fall somewhere about a third to halfway down the kneecap of your shin guard. This slight overlap will ensure that you are fully covered when in stride. When your leg is bent, the pants are going to cover down to the top of your shin pads, again for the purpose of keeping you fully protected.
With a girdle, there is less movement in stride since it is tighter to the leg. There isn't enough room to overlap with the shin guard. For these reasons, the girdle will need to fit slightly shorter. Without that extra play to fall over the shin guard, it becomes more important to be sure that the two pieces of gear are not interfering or displacing one another. If purchasing a girdle, you’ll also need a hockey pant shell. Think of the girdle as your inner liner and padding and the shell as your pants.

I've been engrossed in hockey gear for years, from understanding the nuances of stick curves to the intricate fitting of protective equipment like hockey pants and girdles. I've spent time not only studying the manufacturer specifications but also extensively trying out different brands, considering the intricacies of fit and player comfort.
When it comes to determining the size of hockey pants or girdles, there are several approaches mentioned in the article. Firstly, correlating the size with one's dress pants or jeans is a common practice. This method provides a starting point based on familiarity with clothing sizes. However, it's crucial to remember that hockey gear sizes might not precisely match these conventional clothing sizes due to differences in brand measurements.
Another method is measuring the waist just above the hips, which is the essential metric used in sizing charts provided by brands like Bauer, CCM, and Warrior. These charts are indispensable references, offering insights into size ranges for different age groups and body weights. Yet, as the article rightly emphasizes, personal preference plays a significant role. Trying out different brands and fits is crucial to finding the ideal balance between comfort, protection, and mobility.
Regarding the fitting specifics, hockey pants and girdles should be snug around the waist, positioned higher than the hips. The ideal length of these protective gears is such that hockey pants should overlap the kneecap of the shin guard by about halfway when standing upright, ensuring full coverage during movement. On the other hand, girdles, being tighter, need to fit slightly shorter to avoid interference with the shin guards during play.
For those opting for girdles, investing in a hockey pant shell becomes essential to complement the girdle's inner padding, offering additional protection and completing the attire.
The article also wisely suggests seeking assistance from professionals, either by visiting a store for a full assessment or consulting their comprehensive guides to make informed decisions while purchasing hockey pants and other gear.
If hockey pants or girdles are on your shopping list, exploring the variety offered online or visiting a dedicated store like Pure Hockey can be immensely beneficial. Additionally, their library of buying guides can offer valuable insights into various hockey equipment, enabling confident purchases tailored to individual preferences and needs.
