Turnover In Hockey
A turnover in hockey is a stat used to describe when a team loses possession of the puck to the opposing team.
There are two types of turnovers in hockey:
Giveaway
A giveaway is when a player makes a mistake and loses the puck unforced by their opponent. An example of a giveaway would be if the player with the puck mishandles it and it ends up in the other team’s possession. Another example of a giveaway is if an offensive player passes the puck to their teammate, who misses the pass and loses the puck.
Takeaway
A takeaway is when a player performs an action or pressure that causes the opposing player to lose the puck. An interception is a type of takeaway that happens when a defensive player steals the puck away from the opposing team. This happens through stick checks, body checks, and blocked shots.
Turnover Statistics
In hockey, turnovers are a statistic recorded on the stat sheet for both individual players and teams. Turnovers are a good measure for how well a team is playing and how well they take care of the puck. Often, the team with less turnovers ends up winning the game.
Turnover Examples
- A player passes a puck too far for their teammate to receive it, which results in the other team taking possession of the puck.
- A player puts a body check on an opponent and forces them to lose possession of the puck.
