If You Are Going To Paint Over Bare Drywall or Unfinished Wood
You will want to use 2 coats of primer as the first coat of primer may soak a bit into the material coating the walls.
If You Are Going To Paint Over a Dark or Brightly Colored Previously Painted Wall
You will want to use 2-3 coats of primer to ensure there is a good bond between the new paint and the wall, and also to cover up any previous colors, especially if they are red, orange, or a strange outdated color.
In short, you will typically need 2 coats of primer for most painting projects. Apply primer liberally and allow to dry fully before applying your final coat of interior paint.
