I know it probably depends on many factors, including the actual blade, rocker, material (carbon, stainless), ROH, ice surface, and sharpener plus skating style, level and use, however I'm just wondering if there is a guideline for how many sharpenings most blades last?
The reason for asking is that some people seem to keep the same boot and blade forever (and also never seem to get them sharpened), whilst others repllace boots and blades every year, and I know several people who have returned to skating after a break and found their blades need to be replaced.
Personally I ask my sharpener for their thoughts once the blades have been sharpened more than 10 times, and iirc the last pair had 20 sharpenings before I replaced them as the sharpener said the rocker was flattening out.

As you suspected, the lifespan of the blade is dependent on several factors, with quality and the number of sharpenings being significant. First, it is the responsibility of the person sharpening your blades to do so without altering the profile of the blade or the rocker radius. Therefore, the rocker should not "flatten out." However, if too much pressure is applied while passing over the stone can overheat the blade weakening the steel and removing more steel than is required. That will decrease the useful life of the blade and cause the rocker to flatten.

Of course, poor daily maintenance by the skater can also shorten the life of the blade. When storing blades for an extended period of time, like taking a break, for example, your tech can apply lubricant to the blades to help prevent rust.

In my experience, when blades are properly maintained and sharpened properly by a skilled tech after every 20-30 hours of skating, most skaters can get around 30 sharpenings out of a blade. That said, if you need a need boot before you need a new blade, it may be necessary to replace the blade soon because a different boot may require a different size blade.

I'm sure that others will weigh in, but I hope that helps!

This is such a varied response kind of answer. It depends on so many things for each person and how many sharpenings they'll get out of a blade, as well as the abilities of the tech sharpening them. With what I put my blades through, how much I skate, the ROH I prefer, etc I am lucky to get 18-20 out of a pair of blades. There were a few blades that I got 15 out of but that might have had more to do with the JW issues right now than anything. But it does vary depending on also what type and what blade you have. My ice dance blades can get through a different number of sharpenings than my freestyle blades.

It really depends on "you." How many have you been getting and has it been around the same or close?

I get about 20 usually. I'm lucky to be the type of person to sharpen pretty much once a month because I truly do not notice a difference. So that's getting almost two years out of my blades. I also tend to get two years out of my boots nowadays as well.

After posting I was thinking about this, and since changing sharpener my blades need to be sharpened a lot more frequently. They've now been sharpened 10 times, so it'll be interesting to see how long they last.

Step #3: Select Your Sharpening Radius

The deeper the cut, the more grip the blade will have. The shallower the cut, the more glide the blade will have. For the youth or junior player, we recommend starting with a 1/2" standard sharpening. For the adult player, we recommend starting with a 5/8" standard sharpening.

How often should you sharpen a chisel? ›

Plan to sharpen chisels before using.

How many passes does a knife sharpener have? ›

So yes, you need to do both. Hone your knife weekly—every time you use your knife, if you'd like—and sharpen your knife every few months, or at least every year (depending on how often you use it, and how soon you notice dulling that honing doesn't really improve).

Depending on the frequency that you use your knife, a whetstone should be used about 2-3 times a year. This amount may change if you actively use your knife to cut thicker foods like meat and poultry. Knives used daily to cut through these foods may need to be sharpened an additional time or two per year.

What is the best angle to sharpen a plane blade? ›

The primary bevel for chisels and plane blades is normally 25 degrees (a time-tested angle). If you look at the blade diagram above its perfectly acceptable, from a sharpness perspective, to hone the primary bevel flat and hone the back of the blade flat and where these two meet you can achieve a sharp cutting edge.

How many times can you sharpen clipper blades? ›

With a professional sharpener using the right equipment, your clipper blades can be sharpened between 15-25 times before they need to be retired. What grind do NHL players use? ›

An interesting fact worth noting is that NHL players tend to, on average, skate on much flatter RoHs than your typical recreational player. One NHL team that we are close to claims that greater than 50% of the players are at 5/8” RoH and larger with many in the 3/4”, 7/8”, and 1” RoH range.

How to sharpen skates at home without a machine? ›

Use a flat file to file the blade from toe to heel in a diagonal motion. Be sure the file is always perpendicular to the blade. Slide the flat file across a single blade in the same direction roughly 20 times, then perform the same motion in the opposite direction. Repeat the process for the other skate.

What is the best thing to sharpen chisels? ›

We recommend using a honing guide like the Stanley 0-16-050 or XTrade X0900044 Chisel Set with Sharpening Stone.

What grit is best for sharpening chisels? ›

The diamond stone works so well on coarse work because it cuts aggressively and stays flat. The water stone is great for putting on the final edge. For example, a coarse/fine diamond stone (325/600 grit) combined with a very fine 4000 and 8000 water stone works well for plane irons and chisels.

Do you push or pull when sharpening a chisel? ›
