The co*ckpit takes on an air of unfamiliarity as it fades in the dim red glow of the panel lights. Weather becomes more important, as does flight planning and attention to co*ckpit organization.

The answer depends on where the plane is flying and which aviation authority oversees the airline. Some countries allow pilots to sleep in the flight deck (a.k.a. the co*ckpit), while others — like the United States — forbid the practice.

So how do pilots avoid clouds when flying VFR at night? Moonlight is more common, and more useful for seeing clouds, than you might think. Other than that, you use eyes, weather forecasts, and common sense to avoid flying when there might be clouds you can't see.

Do planes fly lower at night? Technically, no. Day/night has nothing to do with it. If anything, pilots that are flying under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) might opt to fly higher than during the day to improve their odds and better avoid inadvertently flying near terrain or obstructions that are less visible.
