Valorant Episode 5 Act I launched with a hard reset to players’ competitive Valorant ranks and what that means is you may find yourself spending a lot more time to reach your previous rank. But Riot Games has implemented a system that allows players to get a double rank up, which means you can get two ranks with just one win and there are certain conditions that you need to meet to get a double rank up.
Getting double rank ups in Valorant
Senior competitive designer Jon “EvrMoar” Walker explained how the double rank ups in Valorant work in a . Double rank ups come from your rank being "out of the range" of your MMR (matchmaking rating). The highest MMR range you can have is 3 ranks; so you will be guaranteed to get a double rank up if you ever get 4 ranks away from your MMR. What this means is you have to put forth consistent performances whether you are winning or losing.
MMR range is how you can perform in a good game versus a bad game. As you play more your MMR range can shrink but does not grow past 3 ranks.
There is no way to see your internal MMR and it has led to a lot of negative feedback. In the new system, the game tries to converge your MMR with your rank and if you keep performing well, you should be getting double ranks ups.
MMR is hard to conceptualize without understanding how the math works, so in one game you may top frag and go +5 MMR, in another you could bottom frag and go +30. This makes it really hard to understand when you are going to rank up or how and why that match impacted your MMR etc. Usually, your MMR fluctuates in a range until you take steps to improve or play more.
EvrMoar revealed that Riot just wants to “make sure your rank meets your MMR fast, within the number of matches a system needs to validate MMR. Then there is no difference to showing MMR or not, in either system you play the same amount of matches and see the same rank.”
For players who are looking to rank up fast, they need to perform well and if their internal MMR is higher than their rank, they will eventually receive double rank ups so the system converges both metrics and helps you attain your “true rank."
