Jock Itch: Tinea Cruis Fungus Infection (2024)

Jock itch or jock rot is a fungal infection (tinea cruris) caused by wearing clothes that are too tight or that don't let air circulate.

What Causes It?

  • Jock itch usually occurs in damp, dark areas such as folds of the skin — especially in people who are overweight — or if you sweat a lot from hot, humid weather or while exercising.
  • Warm weather and tight clothing (which hold in heat and moisture) encourage fungal growth.

Symptoms

  • Burning
  • Redness
  • Soreness
  • Itching on the genitals and inside of the thighs

Prevention

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing.
  • Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes (skinny jeans, stretch pants, or tights).
  • Change your clothes every day and wash clothing and bedding in hot water.
  • Apply talcum or other powders to help keep the area dry.

Treatment

Heat will make the itchiness worse. To relieve and treat your symptoms:

  • Run cool water over the affected area.
  • Place a cold clean washcloth on the skin.
  • Take cool showers.
  • Apply ice packs, or ice cubes in a plastic bag.
  • Rub cornstarch on the affected area.
  • If necessary, use a prescription medication.

Using a topical anti-fungal lotion may help. Make sure it contains the ingredient "miconazole." Here’s how to properly use it:

  1. Wash and thoroughly dry the affected area.
  2. Apply a thin coat of the anti-fungal product and gently rub in.
  3. Wash your hands afterwards.
  4. Check the product directions to see how often to apply.
  5. Continue to use and apply lotion for one to two weeks after seeing results.

If your rash reappears or your symptoms get worse, seek medical attention.
