How hard is it to play junior hockey? ›

The junior hockey level is one of the hardest levels for a young hockey player to adapt to. A lot of them have to move away from home, which can be hard. As these young players move up in the ranks of hockey, it just gets more difficult and intense. The players get better and the coaches get more demanding.

Junior Hockey provides many opportunities for a player to improve and showcase their individual and team skills. The opportunities are provided through a schedule of highly competitive league games and participation in showcase and league tournaments including national tournaments.

Each time, the estimated chance is around 5% or less. Further to this, unless you are a generational talent like Sidney Crosby or Connor McDavid, you could potentially be stuck in junior leagues or minor leagues for your whole career, waiting for all of the pieces to fall into place for an NHL club to call you up.

Team and League fees must be paid before the player plays in their first league game. League fees will be invoiced to the player or parent/guardian by the KIJHL and may be paid by credit card or e-transfer.

Kids that start hockey before they are physically and mentally ready are more likely to have a negative experience. It is never too late to start playing hockey. Players have joined hockey programs at 12-13 years old and still made varsity hockey teams.

And while many kids start hockey at ages 5-9, older kids can and should join whenever they become interested.

Tier 1 USHL players compete in the toughest junior hockey league and two percent of these athletes are scouted and signed to NHL programs. The other 98 percent of USHL athletes are recruited by NCAA Division 1 programs and are the first in line for athletic scholarships.

USA Hockey's junior program provides opportunities for players ages 16-to-20 to hone and enhance their skills and is an important part of the organization's overall efforts related to player development.

Hockey isn't like other any other sport when it comes to college recruiting. During the months prior to the Combines, interested players are encouraged to fill out an online questionnaire to ensure USHL Player Development is aware of your interest in attending. Players who are invited to participate in the Combines will have been pre-screened and scouted by USHL Central Scouting Staff.

The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) is a Junior A Tier 2 ice hockey league in British Columbia, Canada sanctioned by Hockey Canada.
