mi dispiace

One of the most common ways to say sorry is to use the phrase mi dispiace, or its shortened version, mi spiace. It literally means “it displeases me” and it is used to apologise for something you have done.

While “mi dispiace” might be sincere, “spiacente” is more “sorry, but...” , i.e. you are ready to follow that it is their fault, or that they have to get it anyway. “Mi dispiace” might also be insincere, depending on what follows, but it is more polite anyway. Both words are used to say sorry.
