Wondering, is it an MLS NEXT rule that players arent allowed to play high school soccer? Ive heard some rumors about schools that are going to let MLS NEXT players play on Friday night games. Dont know what the significance of Fridays are but thats what ive heard. What will be the consequence if an MLS NEXT player is caught playing high school soccer? Would the school get punished as well?

I recently looked at the bylaws considering that my son is interested in playing middle school soccer, and will likely play MLS Next next year. The one caveat that I am familiar with is the scenario where a kid is granted a waiver and plays at a private school. Due to financial support or admission to the private school based upon soccer as a talent as a student athlete, the kid could be eligible for a waiver. Not sure if there are other factors which could allow a high school player to participate both on school and MLS Next squad.

It is a league rule and the clubs are the ones bound by the league constraints. The school wouldn't be breaking any rules. They don't owe the clubs anything.

Same rules as DA had. Can not play high school and MLS Next. Not sure of what the penalty is but could be play suspension, team loss of points, or pretty much nothing.

This will be interested as I know of 2 different MLS kids (for different clubs). One of them plays on my kid's high school team, and did indeed play last season. It will be interesting if he plays again or not. I personally don't have an issue with it, but rules are rules. The other I know goes to another county high school. It will be interesting to see if either play this season.

Yes it would be. Two from AU played HS and MLSNext last year. AU knew and did ZERO. I guess if one of them is the "golden" boy they look the other way.

Tampabay Rowdies last year caught 3 or 4 players playing HS and got kicked off the team. Heard they werent even allowed to play in other leagues for that year.

I agree, Rules are Rules.

I kind of think the rules were kind of up in the air during COVID and the first MLS season which is why some may have gotten away with it last year.

Rules are Rules. Some wanted to play but AU said no. MLS =Next doesnt allow it...

But... when star player plays...look other way.

I assume this rule is to help prevent players from training/playing too much so that they can perform to their fullest capability in MLS NEXT competition. Who cares? HS soccer is fun and I’d even say for some it helps them to expand their creativity and have fun doing so in front of their school friends. I think for some skilled players HS will add to their game.

Here is the language from the MLS Next rules. Basically play high school unless you are on scholarship to play soccer at a private school and you can't play in any spring or summer MLS Next games. Obviously the league doesn't have the resources to police this but I don't think clubs will try get around the rule if it means forfeiting games and/or their membership in the league. Should be interesting to see how it develops.

c. Player Participation in Middle and High School Soccer

Club Players must agree to forgo participating simultaneously in both (1) MLS NEXT and (2) high school or middle school soccer.
Except as set forth herein, players who participate in high/middle school soccer are ineligible to participate in MLS NEXT Events.
Only players who have been granted a waiver by PDev will be allowed to remain on their Club’s Roster during the high school soccer season (waivers are not available for middle school). This waiver must be granted by PDev before September 12, 2020, to be considered for the Roster exemption for the 2020-2021 MLS NEXT Season. The waiver eligibility guidelines are as follows and further information may be found in the MLS NEXT High School Waiver:

i. The Player received or will receive financial aid dependent on high school soccer participation.
ii. The Player has been accepted into a private high school based on soccer participation.

Although Clubs are not limited to a specific number of waivers, the number is naturally self-limiting to field a full Team throughout the MLS NEXT Season.

Full-time Players registered with a Club who do not meet waiver eligibility and choose to play with their high school team will not be allowed to re-enter the Program during the same MLS NEXT Season after participating in the high school season with their current or a different Club.
