New social media winter challenge to attempt in cold SouthCoast weather (2024)

NEW BEDFORD – Have you tried the “Boiling Water Challenge” yet? A trend on Tik Tok, and other social media platforms, the challenge experiments whether the outside temperature is cold enough to instantly freeze a pot of boiling water. It might be cold enough for thephenomenon to work in the South Coast this winter.

People have been using a mug, pot or bowl of hot boiling water and throwing it up in the air to see how it reacts to the cold air. If the challenge is successful, the liquid in the air should dissolve, or instantly evaporate, into tiny snowflakes or a cloud of vapor.

It can be a stunning visual, especially if the video is slowed down.

The craze originally started in Canada’s Northwest Territories in -22 Fahrenheit weather. However, it’s been confirmed to still work with temperatures under 19 degrees.

As much as this challenge can lead to some mind-blowing images, participants should of course be cautious when throwing boiling water into the air. It can easily splash back onto them. There have been reports of people being burned.

According to an article in Global News, “Health experts agree the boiling water challenge is tempting and maybe even a fun science experiment. But it’s not always safe.”

The article also warns that only one person does it, at a time, as the boiling water can easily strike a nearby bystander. It also suggested participants to be weary of the direction of the wind so it doesn’t blow back in their face.

This may or may not be the next “Ice Bucket Challenge” but there’s already a slewof videos online. A majority of challengers hail from the Midwest, but that hasn’t stopped people trying it here too.
