What do the abbreviations in hockey stats mean? ›

GP – Games played – Number of games the player has set foot on the ice in the current season. G – Goals – Total number of goals the player has scored in the current season. A – Assists – Number of goals the player has assisted in the current season. P or PTS – Points – Scoring points, calculated as the sum of G and A.

/A. Indicates that the statistic is adjusted. /G. Indicates that the statistic is per game played.

According to blogger Kent Wilson, most players will have a Corsi For percentage (CF%) between 40 and 60. A player or team ranked above 55% is often considered "elite".

Scoring four goals in a hockey game is much less common than a hat trick. If a player scores four goals in a single game, it is sometimes referred to as a “Texas hat trick.” This term is less commonly used than a hat trick, and its origins are uncertain.

A qualifying offer becomes a contract. If you sign it, you get the salary/years offered. Once free agency begins (July 1), if the player did not sign the qualifying offer with their respective team they are free to sign an offer sheet with any other club.

When an even-strength goal or shorthanded goal is scored, the plus–minus statistic is increased by one ("plus") for those players on the ice for the team scoring the goal but decreased by one ("minus") for those players on the ice for the team allowing the goal. Power play or penalty shot goals are excluded.

Description. F1 - first forward into the zone pursues the puck aggressively. F2 - second forward into the zone goes immediately to the puck side boards to take away any pass up the boards. F3 - third forward into the zone goes to the middle of the ice between the hash marks.

A team's Corsi number takes the number of shot attempts by the team and divides it by the number of shot attempts by its opponent. The higher the number, the better.

Fenwick. Fenwick For (FF): Unblocked shot attempts made by a player in the course of a game while a player is on the ice. Fenwick Against (FA): Unblocked shot attempts allowed by a team for players on the ice.

Another great way to consider both quality for and against together is to look at the overall percentage of shot quality generated. If a player has an xGF% of more than 50%, that means they are helping create an offensive advantage for their team as measured by shot quality.

'Six and Seven Hole': the six and seven holes are relatively new terms to identify the areas under either armpit of the goalie. Goaltenders who hold their trapper high or blocker further out to the side of their body are said to have six and seven holes.

A player gets a hat-trick when they score three goals in one game, but the use of the term actually didn't start on the football pitch. The phrase came from cricket, and was used when a bowler took three wickets from three consecutive balls. The club would give the bowler a hat to celebrate this achievement.

Only F1 will use the extended DRS zone. The supporting Formula 2 and Formula 3 championships, which both also have DRS, will use the zone in the same form as in 2021, when only F3 was on the support bill.

Relative Corsi and a Player's Impact

The way to read this stat is simple. If the number is positive, the team is better when he is on the ice than off it. High positive percentages are elite players. Closer to zero means the player is not making the team any better or worse.

A good benchmark for a player is to get 20 goals in a 80 game season. Pastrnak is on pace for over 50 goals, which would put him at the top of the league. He is averaging more than a point per game – fantastic. If you can even average 0.5 points per game you will be in the league a long time.

Goals Above Replacement (GAR, WAR, and SPAR) is a metric that attempts to assign a total value to each player, which represents how much that player contributed to their team in a single number.

Total distance, high-speed running (>15.5 km·h), sprinting (>20 km·h), and mean speed were recorded. Players were categorized into 4 positions: fullback (FB), halfback (HB), midfield (M), and forward (F).

xG does not take into account the quality of player(s) involved in a particular play. It is an estimate of how the average player or team would perform in a similar situation.

For ice hockey, the goals against average statistic is the number of goals a goaltender allows per 60 minutes of playing time. It is calculated by taking the number of goals against, multiply that by 60 (minutes) and then dividing by the number of minutes played.

Plus−minus (+/−, ±, plus/minus) is a sports statistic used to measure a player's impact on the game, represented by the difference between their team's total scoring versus their opponent's when the player is in the game. In ice hockey, it measures a player's goal differential.

ESP: Points scored at even strength. SHP: Points scored while short-handed. PPP: Points scored on the power play. HmP: Points scored on home ice.

What does PK mean in NHL 22? ›

The conventional measurement of NHL team performance in short-handed situations is the Penalty Kill Percentage (PK%): how often the team's penalty killers do their job and prevent the other team from scoring on the power play.

Hockey's plus/minus may be the worst statistic in hockey, although there is some debate with goalie statistics not based off of save percentage (like GAA or Win% that just adds a team component to a goalie's save percentage). It could even be in contention for just the worst statistic in sport.
