Northeastern University sophom*ore goaltender Devon Levi has beennamed the recipient of the 2022 Tim Taylor Award, bestowed annuallyupon the best first-year player in NCAADivision I men’s ice hockey, the HockeyCommissioners’ Association announcedtoday. He is the first NU player to win thisaward and the eighth from the HockeyEast Association in the 16 years in whichthe award has been bestowed. Theaward is voted on by the nation’s assistantcoaches and is named for the former YaleUniversity and U.S. Olympic Team headcoach.
A native of Dollard des Ormeaux,Quebec, Levi leads the nation in savepercentage, finishing at .952. He recorded 10 shutouts in his first seasonof college hockey and compiled a goalsagainst average of 1.54 in his 32 starts.He did not play a minute in the 2020-21 season, either hampered by injury or playing forTeam Canada at the World Junior Championships
Tim Taylor, for whom the award is named,spent 28 seasons at Yale and became theschool’s winningest head coach as he collected 337 victories. His tenure spanned from1976-2006, while taking two years on leaveto coach the U.S. Men’s Olympic Ice HockeyTeam as an assistant coach in 1984 and asthe head coach in 1994. Taylor was captain ofthe Harvard University men’s ice hockey teambefore he graduated in 1963. He began hiscoaching career at his alma mater, serving asan assistant coach on the Crimson staff underRalph “Cooney” Weiland and Bill Cleary beforebeginning his time with the Bulldogs in NewHaven, Connecticut.
The Hockey Commissioners Associationsponsors this award which results from a ballotcontaining each NCAA Division I ice hockey conference’s Rookie of the Year. The runner-up forthis year’s Tim Taylor Rookie of the Year Awardwas the University of Michigan’s Luke Hughes, afreshman defenseman from Canton, MI.
