Ovechkin reveals the reason he isn't allowed to wear a tinted visor anymore (2024)

When Alexander Ovechkin came into the National Hockey League in 2005, he brought swagger and a style that was desperately needed. Along with being a goal scoring machine, his tinted visor and yellow laces are what people remember about Ovechkin's rookie campaign in the league.

During a recent sit down with ESPN's Kevin Weekes on a documentary about his career thus far, Ovechkin revealed that the reason he is no longer allowed to wear a tinted visor, which were banned by the NHL in 2006. Ovechkin said it's because goaltenders, including Martin Brodeur, were complaining to the NHL saying that it was an unfair advantage as they couldn't see where he was looking.

"[Martin] Brodeur started crying to the league, 'I can't see his eyes'. What are you talking about?" Ovechkin told Weekes.

"The league I said I can't wear visor. It's you [goalies] always crying," Ovechkin continued."
