Do you know what qualities make premium denim different from regular denim? I just attended a denim workshop and today I am teaming up with Nordstrom to share my denim knowledge with you. You won’t believe the denim facts I learned. Do you know how many pairs of hands have to touch denim to make it premium?

100! 100 pairs of hands touch denim during the denim making process for it to become premium denim. Isn’t that unbelievable? I was thrilled that Nordstrom Northpark Center store manager Vanessa Fernandes invited me to the store last week to go through the premium denim certification process. We spent the morning with Kellie Carlson, TBD and Trend Accessories Department Manager and her denim team learning key facts about what separates premium from regular denim. Y’all, I had no idea so I was thrilled to learn all of this.

Premium Denim

3 Things that define Premium Denim

-FIT: crafted for the body

-Fabric: Always made in US and created exclusively from Japanese, Turkish or Italian Denim.

-Quality: They have hand finished washes with more detail.

Sizing and Care

-Take your size and add 21 (example: I’m a size 6, add 21 and my denim waist size should be around a 27)

-Denim will “give” not stretch out, buy what feels comfortable on you.

-Wash denim sparingly, and do not dry.

-Dye Trick: wash your denim with half cup of white vinegar on the first wash to set denim dye to prevent bleeding affect.

Fall Trends

-High Waisted: this looks good on EVERYONE! More comfortable and jeans will be much more flattering with a high rise.

-Clean and Simple Washes: fun ankle details will continue.

-Washed Black: BIG for fall, expect more of this and less of a true black.

-Straight Leg: Long, cropped and ankle styles.

-Denim Skirts: Will continue all through fall, the best thing to pair a sweater and booties back to.

For today’s post, I wore a pair of Paige premium denim jeans. I’m incorporating the fall trend of straight leg, ankle crop for this post. These jeans come with a finished hem but I had them cut off the hem so that it will eventually have a frayed hem look. These jeans are high waisted, which is good for me because my body is high waisted. They fit like a glove and do not loosen up throughout the day. I paired them with a simple white t-shirt and this oversized layered ruffle sleeve cardigan sweater that I will be wearing the entire fall/winter season. The sweater comes in this beautiful lavender and also in black. For size reference, I am wearing the sweater in a US 8 because the Topshop brand runs small.

Want to know why I’m laughing so much in these shots? First of all, it was 100 degrees the day we shot this look and I’m sweating profusely. Second, to get the layered ruffle sleeve to move for the shot, I was basically dancing the cha-cha on the sidewalk. You can imagine the looks I got!

Great info that I never really thought of, but makes sense as to why some jeans are just perfect and others are no so much.

    Thanks.

    Hi Tanya,
I love your looks, and am shopping for fall denim. Although I love the look of the nude heals you are wearing above with the ankle jeans, I just can’t wear that heel height anymore. What type of show would you suggest inlace of those 3 inch heals. I’m thinking a mule or open toe bootie? Thanks!
