And yes, you're pronouncing it wrong.
IKEA is one of our go-to furniture shops, especially when we're wanting to score things on the cheap and hack them into something truly wow-worthy, so we don't really question anything IKEA does—except it's name. Why is it written in all caps? If you've ever wondered this, too, there's finally an answer. And soul-crushing news: You're also pronouncing it wrong.
As it turns out, IKEA isn't just a fun, Scandinavian word, it's actually an acronym—Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd. Decidedly less cool than IKEA, right? But it actually has a deeper meaning. The founder of IKEA, Ingvar Kamprad, lends his initials to the first two letters, while the "E" comes from the farm he grew up on, Elmtaryd, and the "A" from the Swedish village, Agunnaryd, where the farm was located. Pretty standard to name your company after yourself and the place you grew up.
So now that you know the story behind it, it's time to learn how to actually pronounce it. Rather than pronouncing it "eye-key-ah," as most of us do, you should be saying 'ee-kay-uh." This video below will show you how to say it correctly. Everything we thought we knew is a lie.
