What are the pregame duties of the referee? ›

A referee is a sports professional who oversees competitions and ensures players follow the rules of a game. Referees look for rule violations, give out warnings and penalties, monitor time remaining in the game and make sure players are safe.

Referee Responsibilities

He or she is responsible for the entire event which includes activities before, during and after the game. The referee is the final decision maker in matters relating to the play and his decisions are biding.

Inspect the Field:

All dangerous rocks, trash, or other objects that don't belong on the field should be removed. Nets should be securely fastened to the goal posts and netting pulled back so as not to interfere with the goalkeeper. Make sure there are no holes in the nets where a ball can get through.

If in the opinion of the Match Referee the matter cannot be dealt with satisfactorily and the welfare of any participants remains at risk, in terms of the threat of continued abuse or violence, they should consider abandoning the match.

Three duties of the First Referee during the match are: To give signals to indicate faults and breaking of the laws. To sanction misconduct and delays. To request a time-out.

• 2 Minutes before start

First referee will blow the whistle for the teams to line-up at the baseline, and then whistle for players to enter the court. Second referee checks the players starting positions. The second referee checks that the scorer is also finished checking and is ready to start.
