Rivalries are a recurring theme in the Mega Man franchise. In each series, the hero often has rival in which they compete with to determine who is the superior being, whether they are willing to or not. Rivals can range from friendly to hostile, but in certain situations are set aside to deal with a mutual threat. Some rivalries don’t concern strength or fighting, but between two beings for the affections of another.

Original Mega Man series[]

Proto Man, indebted to Dr. Wily for saving him, was originally a rival to Mega Man before turning on Wily when he learned what his intentions were. Since then, Proto Man has acted as a friendly rival to Mega Man, testing him and aiding him to make sure Mega Man still has what it takes to save the world.

Bass is Mega Man’s bitter rival, despite the latter’s protests, and the two clash often. Bass is determined to defeat Mega Man and prove that he is the strongest robot, though Mega Man does not wish to fight Bass and does not consider the two enemies, instead wishing they could be friends. The two have set aside their differences many times to handle a mutual threat, which is often Wily scheming against the both of them.
