331.1 - Compounds containing the group Rule C-331 Acetals (2) are termed acetalsRule C-331 Acetals (3) and are namedsubstitutively as dialkoxy (etc.) compounds; alternatively, the name of the corresponding aldehyde or ketone is followed by that of the hydrocarbon radical(s) (if necessary with the prefix"di-", "bis", etc.), which in turn is followed by the word "acetal"Rule C-331 Acetals (4).

331.2 - A cyclic acetal in which the two acetal-oxygen atoms form part of a ring may be named: (a) as a heterocyclic compound; (b) by use of the prefix "methylenedioxy-"for the group Rule C-331 Acetals (6) as a substituent in the remainder of the molecule, derivatives of the methylenedioxy group being named as substitution products thereof (see also RuleC-205.2); or (c) particularly when stereochemistry is implied in the name of the corresponding alcohol or ketone, as the alkylene or alkylidene derivative of that alcohol or asthe alkylene or alkylidene acetal of that ketone (see Rule C-331.1).
