Texas Rangers owner Ray Davis invested heavily in his team.

Over the last two years, he has committedover $800 million in free agent contractsand built a club with a franchise-record payroll near $240 million for 2023. As a result, the Rangers will be a payer of baseball’s Competitive Balance Tax for going over the $233 million threshold.

Davis’ investment was worth it, as the Rangers won their first World Series in franchise history after knocking off the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0 in Game 5 on Wednesday.

“All I can say is we’re World Series champions forever. Can’t ever take it away from us,” Davis said in an interview with NBC 5. “The franchise waited a long time for this minute and here we are. And I’m so proud of this team, the baseball people, the city of Arlington, all of it. I’m just thrilled.”

A large portion of that money went to the signings of Corey Seager (10 years, $325 million), Marcus Semien (seven years, $175 million) and Jacob deGrom (five years, $185 million) over the last two offseasons.

But those weren’t the only big changes Davis made. He also fired manager Chris Woodward and replaced him with then three-time World Series champion Bruce Bochy and parted ways with Jon Daniels to give the general manager keys to Chris Young.

“They’re the best,” Davis said. “I wouldn’t trade them for another GM or another manager. They’re the best.”

Does the World Series win make up for the heartbreak the Rangers suffered in the 2011 World Series against the Cardinals?

“No. That will always hurt,” Davis said. “We were one strike away twice from winning and that will stick with me forever. But it motivates us to want to come back and win.”
