Baseball has been around FOREVER, and players have been wearing numbers on their jerseys since the 1920s. But believe it or not, there are FOUR two-digit numbers that have NEVER been worn.

They are: 80, 86, 89, and 92.

Coming into the season, there were SIX unused numbers, but then relief pitcher Adam Cimbertook one off the board, when he became the first to ever use #90. Then, relief pitcher Pat Neshekbecame the first to wear #93.

And now that the list of unique, unused numbers is dwindling, it wouldn't be surprising if players started snapping them up.

Back when players first started wearing numbers, it wasn't just a free-for-all. In Babe Ruth'sday, the jersey numbers corresponded to what order they batted in the lineup . . . so Babe was #3, and Lou Gehrigwas #4.

Later, they were assigned based on what position a player played. But after a bunch of numbers were retired, that tradition was abandoned. Players have been choosing their own numbers since the '70s and '80s.
