The baggage allowance is listed to the right of each flight coupon. It should say something either like 1P (1 Piece of luggage) or 25KG indicating a weight allowance.

If your bag exceeds 50 pounds but is less than 70 pounds, you may have to pay up to $200 per bag. If your bag weighs more than 70 pounds but less than 100 pounds, you may have to pay up to $400 per bag (depending on your destination). United Premier Elites or those traveling in premium cabins.

United economy passengers who book domestic tickets starting Feb. 24 will pay $40 for a first checked bag, or $35 if they prepay online at least 24 hours before their flight, an increase of $5. A second checked bag will cost $50 at the airport, or $45 in advance, up $5 for both options.

Under the Weight Concept, each passenger is permitted to check in a total weight regardless of the number of suitcases. Often passengers traveling together can also combine their allowed weights. The total weight varies per airline and depends on the class, elite status, type of ticket, flight origin and destination.

There are a few quick and easy ways to check if you booked checked in luggage. Probably the quickest way is to find the email that we sent you with your tax invoice. On that email you'll see a Checked Bag listed under the description column in the charges section.

You can also ask the airline employee at the check-in counter or call up the airline before heading to the airport. They will be able to tell you if your bag is transferred or not.

Both economy and Economy Plus passengers receive this benefit free of charge, but all three fare types will need to pay for checked baggage when flying domestically. Basic economy ticket holders will be restricted to a single personal item (like a purse or small backpack) that fits under the seat in front of them.

While United's carry-on policy has limited luggage size, there is no maximum weight allowance. If you can fit it into your carry-on bag and it's acceptable to bring on board, it doesn't matter how much carry-on items weigh.

Weigh yourself on a home scale, then weigh yourself holding the bag. Subtract the first from the second and you'll get the weight of the bag. If the bag is bigger than the scale, such as hanging over the sides, it won't weigh properly and that's why you have to stand on the scales holding it.

Carry-on bag

You can prepay to check a bag or check a carry-on at your gate for the regular bag fee plus an additional $25.

Unlike other major carriers that offer free carry-on baggage regardless of fare class, United does not allow carry-on bags that need to be stored overhead for basic economy fares, unless you're flying to South America or are taking a transpacific or transatlantic flight.

Flyers with a basic economy ticket are not permitted to put a carry-on in the overhead bin – they're limited to one small personal item underneath the seat. With a normal economy fare, you can bring a normal carry-on bag onboard. Because of that, basic economy passengers cannot check in online or using the United app.
