Upzek (2024)

Upzek is the relationship between Intelligence members Hailey Upton & Adam Ruzek in Chicago PD.

Overview[]

Adam is the first to welcome Hailey when she joins Intelligence, being happy to have a newcomer on the team. In the beginning they are friends, but in season 5, tensions begin to grow between the two member when their work methods clash. They eventually resolve their issues and become close friends by the following season. While rarely partnered with Ruzek, she is often the one keeping him in line and is unwilling to follow him blind. In season 6, Adam comforts Hailey after almost losing Jay and this leads to a one-night stand. They decide to continue this relationship and see where it goes. They begin to work more together and challenges start to grow between them and they eventually realize that they are better of as friends. Even after their break-up, Hailey and Adam are still there for each other when needed and continue to be close friends.

Season 5[]

Tension between Hailey and Ruzek grow in Snitch when Adam goes nuts and punches a suspect in front of her. Hailey is frustrated with Adam's willingness to break police conduct and yells at him. Later the situation becomes more serious when the suspect files a beef against Adam. IAD wants to talk to him to get his side of the story, so he talks to Hailey to let her know about the situation hoping that she would back him up. Hailey tells him that she has to think about it, scared to lie to IAD and risk her career. Adam is annoyed and walks away. Later once the case is solved, Hailey tells Adam that she got the case to go away. Adam thanks her, but she tells him that she didn't do it for him.

Season 6[]

In New Normal, tensions grow between Adam and Antonio following Olinsky's death. Hailey is caught between the two members and gets frustrated, telling Adam to not bring her into his issues with Antonio.

The frustration is resolved quickly and in Endings, Adam is the one to comfort Hailey after they find Jay shot. Although Jay is okay, she is still saddened and the two decide to grab a drink after the tough case. In the following episode, Bad Boys, Hailey and Adam are seen waking up together after a one-night stand. They agree to keep it low-key, but after the case they decide to continue this relationship, having fun and seeing where it goes.

In Fathers and Sons, Hailey and Adam go undercover to take down a drug dealer and at the meeting he spots a familiar cop. Hailey noticed that Adam was nervous around him and asks about it and he tells her that the cop they saw was his father, Bob Ruzek. Adam keeps the new discovery a secret and continues to solve the case, but Hailey doesn't like it and tells Adam to tell Voight about his dad or she will. Adam tries to get Hailey to understand, but she informs him that although they are now dating, her police methods won't change. Adam tells Voight about his father and continues to solve the case. Eventually, the case is solved, but in the process Bob gets shot. He goes to med and later Hailey meets Adam, being there for him while his father recovers.

During True or False, Hailey and Adam are seen in Upton's bed having an adorable conversation. Ruzek gets a call from his sister, telling him that she can't bring their father to his doctor's appointment. Adam is frustrated and hits the table. Hailey is startled and walks out of the room, telling him that she doesn't do yelling or slamming. They head to a coffee shop before going to work and Adam apologises, assuring Hailey that he isn't a slammer or yeller. She tells Adam to drop her off a few blocks from the district so nobody finds out about their new relationship, saying she doesn't want to deal with HR. Adam agrees and before they get to the district, they hear over their radio calls of distress from a home. When they get to the scene, Adam goes after the getaway car while Hailey goes inside the house. She begins to clear the home and sees a woman beaten in the middle of the room. The victim dies and Hailey is shown to be triggered by the events. She takes the case very personally and Adam worries about her. The duo goes to interview somebody and Hailey begins to get aggressive during the questioning, accusing the father of abusing his daughter after she is seen with a black eye. Ruzek excuses Hailey from the interview and she is furious. Later they find the suspect and Hailey decides to get a confession after finding a weakness in his file. Hailey connects with the suspect, sharing details about her abusive father and childhood. The suspect confesses and as she leaves the interrogation room, Adam asks her whether those stories about her father were true. She denies the stories and tells him that she was just playing the suspect, trying to get a confession. Adam drops the topic and they continue on with the case. Later the team gets evidence proving that the suspect was not responsible for the women's death, and that he had given them a false confession. Hailey begins to beat herself up for pushing the suspect to confess and has a drink with Jay at her place. While they talk, Adam comes over to check on his girlfriend but is surprised to see Jay there. They have an awkward conversation between the three, leaving Jay confused with Ruzek and Upton's relationship. The next day, the team continues to investigate the case trying to find the real killer and eventually the wife's husband is found responsible for her death. After the case is closed, Hailey and Adam have a conversation back at her place, where he revisits Hailey's stories about her dad. She finally tells him that the stories were true and that her family is complicated. Saddened to hear the truth, Adam comforts her and hugs her. Also in this episode, Voight finds out about Upton and Ruzek's relationship.

In Descent and Brotherhood, her relationship with Ruzek deepens, but tensions grow as she is afraid of something happening to him after he covers up a crime for Antonio. Adam and Hailey have a conversation about his actions and Adam believes that Hailey is always against his policing. She tells him that she cares about him alot and before Adam can answer, Jay interrupts them and figures out the relationship between Hailey and Adam. Later in the episode, Hailey confronts Voight about Adam and the situation he is in, asking how she can show loyalty towards Ruzek.

In Ties That Bind, Burgess finally finds out about Hailey and Adam's relationship and tensions grow between them. While going undercover, Kim and Hailey are kidnapped and Adam does everything he can to find the girls, getting on Jay's and Voight's nerves. After the women are rescued, Hailey tells Kim why her and Ruzek decided to keep their relationship hidden.

In Sacrifice, Hailey and Adam are seen leaving her place for work discussing Kelton's place in the elections. They head get called for a nearby robbery and head over there. When they get to the location, they see 2 men robbing a delivery truck, which they later find was delivering pills. They identify one of the suspects and Adam goes under to bust the guy. While under, Hailey makes a decision about the case regarding Adam's role and he confronts her, asking whether their personal life influenced her decision. She denies it and tells him to move on. Trudy sees the tension between the two and decides to give advice to Upton. She tells her that if Ruzek is "the one", then they should try and make it work, but that probably meant that one of them would need to leave Intelligence. Once they solve the case, Hailey is about to head home when Adam stops her, wanting to talk about their day. Hailey decides to take Platt's advice and tells him that they should take a break, explaining that it's hard to work together and be together. Adam agrees and adds that there is more to it though, inferring to Adam's feelings for Kim and Hailey's feelings for Jay.

Season 7[]

Although the season focuses on Upstead and Burzek, Hailey and Adam's friendship continue to grow and this is seen in Absolution when Jay is kidnapped, and Hailey is seen to be spiraling. Adam is there for her assuring her that they will find Jay alive and that everything will be fine. Although this is brief, it is shown that Hailey leans on Adam throughout this time. Their friendship is continued in Mercy, when Jay is found, but rushed to med, and everyone is waiting on his status.

Season 8[]

Throughout season 8, the two had very few moments to remember, just small glances and shoulder taps. In the Season Finale, The Other Side, Burgess is kidnapped and Adam is determined to do whatever it takes to find her, even risk his job. Hailey understanding how it is to lose someone you care about, supports Adam and convinces him to be with Makayla, reminding him that it is his duty to be there for Makayla when Kim can't. Adam agrees and eventually the team find Kim.
