Welcome to How Things Fly (2024)

A:

Most planes use a long runway before takeoff to gain enough speed for the plane to lift up into the air. Most airplanes can take off only if they are moving fast enough. The force of lift needs to be stronger than the force of weight. The exception to this would be vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft. They use thrust to take off and therefore need very little runway. The runway is important for most airplanes because it gives them enough time to accelerate to the required speed to lift into the air.

What are the four forces of flight how things fly? ›

Type. Use items you have at home: balloons, balls, a fan and a stopwatch to act out or understand the forces that act on an airplane. Four forces affect an airplane while it is flying: weight, thrust, drag and lift.

Soar through the blue sky, through the clouds. Revel in my freedom. Sounds really simple, and maybe selfish too, but that's been one of my dreams for the longest time.

What does it mean if lift is proportional to surface area? ›

Lift is directly proportional to the surface area of an object. If you double the surface area you double the lift generated. Most of the lift generated by and airplane is generated by the wings, however all surfaces of the plane will generate lift to some extent.

What would it be like if people could fly? ›

Travel in general would certainly be a lot easier for the individual… as we'd no longer be limited to just roads, bridges and airports, but could move freely anywhere we like. For the authorities, however, human flight would make monitoring and regulating travel close to impossible and would turn borders obsolete.

What kind of sentence is I wish I could fly? ›

Answer. Answer: Declarative , I think it correct .

How do heavy things fly? ›

Heavier-than-air flight is made possible by a careful balance of four physical forces: lift, drag, weight, and thrust. For flight, an aircraft's lift must balance its weight, and its thrust must exceed its drag. A plane uses its wings for lift and its engines for thrust.

What forces affect all things that fly? ›

Four Forces Affect Things That Fly:
  • Weight is the force of gravity. ...
  • Lift is the force that acts at a right angle to the direction of motion through the air. ...
  • Thrust is the force that propels a flying machine in the direction of motion. ...
  • Drag is the force that acts opposite to the direction of motion.

What is thrust for kids? ›

Thrust is the force that is the opposite of drag. Thrust is the push that moves something forward. For an aircraft to keep moving forward, it must have more thrust than drag. A small airplane might get its thrust from a propeller.

Why do pilots raise their spoilers once on the runway? ›

When the airplane lands on the runway, the pilot usually brings up the spoilers to kill the lift, keep the plane on the ground, and make the brakes work more efficiently. The friction force between the tires and the runway depends on the "normal" force, which is the weight minus the lift.

Do we know how planes fly? ›

A plane flies when all four forces – lift, weight, thrust and drag – work together. DID YOU KNOW? A plane's ability to fly can be explained through a scientific theory called Newton's Third Law of Motion. This law states that 'for every action, there is an equal, but opposite, reaction'.
