Common causes of injury in WA are:

- poisoning (external site)
- violence (external site)
- burns and scalds (external site)
The rates of injury and causes of injury (external site) are different for children, young adults and older adults. According to a framework called The Haddon Matrix (external site), injuries result from a combination of:
- human factors
- agent / vehicle / energy (for example, heat)
- physical and social environments.
The matrix uses an example applied to the problem of injuries to children falling in playgrounds.
