Stop for a moment and think about it… what is the hottest thing in the universe?
The most obvious answer is the sun, right? And if you’re considering our solar system, then you’re correct. However, if you extend that “limited perspective” and extend into other solar systems, the question “what’s the hottest thing in the universe” gets a whole lot more complicated.
Our universe runs on heat. It’s the light and energy that makes everything go around… literally. Especially in our solar system. But with that said, even though it may seem that the sun is the hottest thing ever, it’s not.
What Is The Hottest Temperature Ever Recorded?
The hottest temperature ever recorded on our planet was in Furnace Creek (that’s in Death Valley) in 1913. Personally I find this confusing because I thought global warming was making everything hotter; how was the hottest day in 1913??
Anyways, that’s a whole other subject. However, the fact remains: the hottest temperature ever recorded was a blistering day of 134 degrees Farenheit in Death Valley over a century ago. Libya was a contender for a long time as well, with a super hot record of 136.4 degrees Farenheit.
What’s The Coldest Temperature?
You’re not going to believe this. The coldest temperature ever recorded was -128.6 Farenheit. This ridiculously cold day was July 21, 1983 in Vostok, Antarctica.
To put this in perspective, the record for the lowest body temperature at which an adult has been known to survive is 56.7 F, after being submerged in cold, icy water. At 82 degrees F, you’d likely lose consciousness. At 70 degrees F you’d experience a profound and deadly hypothermia. So whoever this guy is who managed to survive that cold should be very happy he’s still alive!

What Is The Hottest Thing In The Universe?
A supernova is the hottest thing in the universe. The temperatures at the core during an explosion skyrocket up to 6000X the temperature of the sun’s core.
What’s The Hottest Thing On Earth?
Obviously a supernova explosion is hot. However, scientists created the world’s hottest man-made temperature at the Large Hadron Collider.
They tested smashing gold particles together and for a very brief moment in time the temperature reached 7.2 trillion degrees Farenheit. That’s even hotter than the supernova explosion!
Also, of note: lightning is 5x hotter than the sun! So while everyone thinks the sun dominates as the hottest thing in the universe… there are actually quite a few things hotter than the sun!
