Turnover is the guy giving away the puck and takeaway is the guy that takes the puck?

I wouldn't say that they are exactly the same.
A takeaway is an active act of stealing the puck from the opponent / puck-carrier, a turnover is the puck-carrier needlessly giving up the puck. You could have a turnover/giveaway without a takeaway, if the opponent ends up with the puck without having attempted to get it. You cannot really have a takeaway without a turnover/giveaway though.

How different arenas track them can be a bit frustrating but it is a tough thing to pin down. I wish a lot of the giveaways would be changed to takeaways though. A lot of the time a giveaway is due to an impressive defensive positioning play rather than the blame being placed solely on the player "giving it away".

Takeaway - By definition a takeaway occurs when pressure from the defending team results in a defending player gaining possession of the puck.
Giveaway - A giveaway is when a players own actions result in a loss of possession to the opposing team.

This.
A takeaway IS a turnover, and so is a giveaway.

The truth is the only difference is the whim of the official scorer for the game that night. There is no consistent enforcement across the league of takeaways or turnovers and how they are determined.

Then the league total of takeaways should equal the number of giveaways, right?
I don't think it's the case.

They are changing the discussion because your question is kind of stupid, if you're going to scold people for not talking about exactly what you want them to talk about.
You're asking to compares a species with its genus which makes no sense.
A takeaway, like a giveaway, is a form of a turnover.
It's like the Yukon and Escalade are types of SUVs and you're asking "What's the difference between an SUV and a Yukon?" and the responses you are getting are "Well the Yukon IS an SUV, are you wanting to compare it to an Escalade or something?"

A turnover is a pastry usually though not always with a sweet filling.
Takeaway is what you order over the phone from your local Chinese restaurant.

A "turnover" is a colloquial term used by those in the hockey industry to refer to situations where a player commits a "giveaway" or a similar type play that may not count as an official giveaway.
A takeaway is an official hockey term which refers to situations where a defensive player, through his own means, forces the offensive player to relinquish control of the puck.
A giveaway will always be a turnover, but a turnover doesn't always have to be a giveaway. A takeaway is something completely different.

This.
The barn a team is playing in has more to do with the number of giveaways and takeaways than what happens on the ice.

So, if someone Schultz's the puck in their end and passes right to an open opposing player some distance away, it's a giveaway, but not a takeaway. But if someone Jultz's and loses the puck jumping for his life out of the way of a hit and the opposing player takes the puck away from him, it's a giveaway and a takeaway.
Should there always been a giveaway associated with a takeaway? But not always a takeaway associated with a giveaway. I think lots of the time there are takeaways awarded without giveaways, but that doesn't seem right to me. If you got your pocket picked, you should get marked down for it.
