Football fans love goals, and love celebrating them too. But how would a team’s fans celebrate if they saw one of their players scoring 16 goals in one game – the most ever?
Goals are, of course, the staple diet of football. In the Premier League, we have seen remarkable feats of goalscoring. Kevin De Bruyne’s four goals against Wolves last season added the Belgian to the list of players who have scored as many in a match.
Only five players in the history of the Premier League have scored five goals in a single fixture:
- Andy Cole (Manchester United 9–0 Ipswich Town)
- Alan Shearer (Newcastle United 8–0 Sheffield Wednesday)
- Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur 9–1 Wigan Athletic)
- Dimitar Berbatov (Manchester United 7–1 Blackburn Rovers)
- Sergio Agüero (Manchester City 6–1 Newcastle United)
Even more remarkable is the fact that Defoe’s five-goal haul was in a single half. The Englishman scored all five of his goals after half-time in his sdie’s 9-1 thrashing of Wigan.
However, all these numbers pale into insignificance when it comes to the record for most goals in one game.
Stephan Stanis scores most goals in one game
Frenchman Stephan Stanis holds the Guinness World Record for scoring the most goals in a single game.
The striker got on the scoresheet 16 times in RC Lens’ French Cup fixture against Auby-Asturies in 1942. He still holds the Guinness World Record for this feat today.
The final score in the match was an incredible 32-0.
Stanis (birthname Stefan Dembicki) has Polish parents and moved to France at an early age. He played for Lens between 1936 and 1949.
During this time, he is predicted to have 225 goals in 275 appearances. He also enjoyed a productive loan spell at EF Lens-Artois for the 1943/44 season, scoring a predicted 48 goals in just 35 appearances.
Following his incredible 13 years at Lens, the striker moved to RC Arras. There he spent the final year of his career before retiring from football.
The record
This incredible record has been matched only once. Olympos Xylofa*gou’s striker, Panagiotis Pontikos, scored 16 goals against SEK Ayios Athanasios FC in a 24-3 win on 6 May 2007.
There is no denying that Stanis’ record is absolutely remarkable. It is unlikely it will ever be broken.
