WHICH GOALTENDERS HAVE RECORDED SHUTOUTS WITH AT LEAST FIFTY SAVES?

This is a work in progress - and will likely *always* be a work in progress. Shots on goal have not always been an officialNational Hockey League statistic, and so it may be that we never know about some 60-save shutout in 1938. Having said that, this pageis reasonably new, and I'm sure that I'm missing something that someone else knows about. If you have facts or nteresting anecdotes to add to this entry, please contact me.

Ben Scrivens holds the (known) National Hockey League record for the greatest number of saves in aregular season shutout, with fifty-nine.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE (REGULAR SEASON):

59 saves: On January 29, 2014, Edmonton's Ben Scrivens recorded a fifty-nine save, 3-0 shutoutvictory over the visiting San Jose Sharks. Scrivens, who had been traded from the Los Angeles Kings to Edmonton precisely two weeks earlier, saw 20 shots in thefirst period, 22 shots in the second period, and 17 shots in the third period (overall, Edmonton was outshot by a 59-27 margin). "I was seeing the puck well," he said afterwards. "We got extremely lucky with a couple of posts in the second. I had an awful, awful warm-up, it was an inauspicious start to it. It's one of those things where you try not to look at the forest while you're in the trees. You try to focus on the process and give yourself a chance to make that save and when the puck drops again, you try to focus on the next one and don't try to get too far ahead of yourself."

54 saves: On April 3, 2012, Phoenix's Mike Smith kicked aside fifty-four Columbus shots in a 2-0 win for the PhoenixCoyotes. In doing so, Smith extended his shutout streak to 219 minutes, 59 seconds.

"A lot went untold there," Anderson said after being saluted by his teammates with a Superman-style cape and a shaving cream pie-in-the-face. "A lot of guys were blocking shots, a lot of guys were collapsing, putting their faces on the line. "Most of the shots were from the outside. They did a good job of clogging up the middle and allowing me to see the puck. A lot of times, I got point shots that hit me in the chest." Two nights later, Anderson had another 1-0 shutout win, a 40-save effort over Boston.

52 saves: On December 10, 1996, Edmonton's Curtis Joseph turned back fifty-shots from the Detroit Red Wings.Unfortunately for Joseph, the Oilers couldn't score on Chris Osgood, and so Joseph was only rewarded with a 0-0 overtime tie.

52 saves: On April 21, 2022, Casey DeSmith of the Pittsburgh Penguins stopped fifty-two Boston shots in a 4-0 win over the Bruins. Because teammate Jake Guentzel registered a hat trick in the contest, DeSmith wasn't even chosen as the game's number one star.

The Rangers' Henrik Lundqvist stopped all forty-five shots faced by him, so the game needed a shootoutto decide things. 51 saves: On December 13, 2010, Los Angeles' Jonathan Quick stopped fifty-one Detroit shots to earn a 5-0 victory overthe Red Wings.

63 saves: On June 10, 1996, Colorado's Patrick Roy stopped sixty-three shots in a 1-0, three overtime, shutout victory over John Vanbiesbrouck and the Florida Panthers. Late in the third overtime,Avalanche defenseman Uwe Krupp beat Vanbiesbrouck, capturing the first Staney Cup in Colorado history.
