Who Is Not a Candidate for Dentures?
Most people, under the right circ*mstances, are perfectly suited for dentures. Obviously, if you have a full set of healthy teeth, then you are not a candidate for dentures. You may think, though, that a young person is not a candidate for dentures, that they are only for the elderly. This is not true. Young people can have missing teeth for any number of reasons, and if those teeth are not replaced, pressure can be exerted on the remaining teeth, resulting in even more tooth loss.
There are many different types of dentures. A person who has lost less than half their teeth may not be a candidate for full dentures, preferring instead to have partial dentures. Implant-supported dentures are very sturdy and reliable, and many patients prefer those over removable dentures. The type of dentures that will work best for you depends on how many teeth you are missing, and whether they are missing in sequence. Your oral health is also a factor – if you have a lot of badly decayed teeth, and you think that you are likely to lose more teeth sooner rather than later, you might opt for having them all extracted and going with full dentures.
In very rare instances, a person might not be a candidate for dentures if they are unwilling to remove them from time to time. For instance, diabetics can quickly develop irritated gums and even small wounds if they wear their dentures all the time. That said, however, it is unlikely that if you are missing teeth, you would not be a candidate for dentures.
Obviously, no one wants to wear dentures, and in fact, if you just have a couple of missing teeth, you may want to consider dental implants as an alternative. Implants are the most expensive restorative dentistry treatment, though, and most insurers will not contribute to the cost. They will, however, pay at least in part for full or partial dentures. And with modern dental services, you can have a set of dentures made that will appear and work as well as your own teeth. They will look completely natural and you will be able to eat anything at ease once again!
