Why are Instagram highlight covers not working? How to fix story glitch (2024)

Reports have been flooding Twitter that there is a glitch with Instagram’s story highlight covers.

Hundreds of Instagram users have grown frustrated after discovering that all of their story highlight covers have gone and they aren’t able to change them back.

Let’s explore the issue and find out if there’s a way to fix it…

Instagram highlight covers not working

On Tuesday (November 16th), many Instagram users began taking to Twitter to complain that their Instagram story highlight covers weren’t working properly.

Usually, users are able to add stories to their profile highlights to ensure they are still viewable after they expire from stories after 24 hours. On top, they can a specific photo as a cover to make their profile look organised.

This week, users have claimed that after logging into their account, they noticed that the story cover they chose has disappeared, and instead, Instagram has automatically set the first highlight as the cover.

Not only that, Instagram users have also claimed that they are unable to change the highlight cover back to a different photo, meaning they’re stuck with the first highlight photo.

Complaints flood Twitter

Frustration has been growing on Twitter following the apparent Instagram glitch.

One person wrote: “Why did Instagram just change all my highlight covers without my authorisation plz.”

“Did anyone else’s Instagram change their story highlight covers?? Wtf @instagram,” said another.

A third person added: “@instagram Story highlight cover changed automatically. Seems like a bug. Please fix this.”

“Instagram changed my story highlights covers and won’t let me choose new ones,” tweeted another.

Is there a way to fix it?

At the time of writing this, Instagram does not appear to have acknowledged or addressed why the error is occurring.

However, it seems to be a glitch on Instagram’s side, and the site is probably aware of the issue and working to fix it.

One person on Twitter has claimed that the glitch only occurs with photos that are already in your story highlights.

So, instead of trying to make one of your stories the highlight cover, try choosing a photo from your camera roll instead.

If this doesn’t work, here are some other things you could try…

  • Close the app and open it again.

First, try completely shutting down your app. On an iPhone, do this by swiping up on your homepage.

  • Log out of the app.

Some users have reported that logging out of the app and then logging back in again has fixed their Instagram.

  • Turn your phone off.

It’s the oldest trick in the book, and sometimes all you’ve got to do is turn your phone off and on again.

  • Delete your app.

You could also try deleting your app and then re-downloading it again from the App Store.

If none of these things work, you might just have to wait a few hours and try again. By then, Instagram should have fixed the glitch.
